Here is a bit of a classic unit! One of the first wide cabs that GE ever came out with could be found on the C41-8W. This unit was originally delivered to UP in September 1993 and, based on how its looking, this is probably the original paint job!

A former Espee AC4400CW (SP 295) heads east amongst a line of dead units. All had been stored in Grand Junction and are now headed for North Platte. Their exact fate is not currently known.

Remember the horsepower race at the end of the 1990s? Railroads wanted more horsepower and EMD produced its SD90MAC and GE produced its AC6000CW, each with 6000 HP. But neither were quite ready for primetime, so EMD made over 300 SD9043MACs and GE made its AC6044CWs. They had 4400 HP, but were designed to have the prime mover swapped out for the 6000 HP counterparts when ready. The only problem was they never really were ready! Here, an AC6044CW heads east at Rocky, clearly defined by its large radiator blister at the back end.

A former Espee AC4400CW leads a light power move out of East Rocky on a clear signal. Eight units are being moved from Grand Junction, CO to North Platte, NE. UP 6191 was delivered as SP 143 in April of 1995. It was moved to the UP roster, getting its new number, on November 4, 2003.

I am very grateful that I have had the chance to shoot Warbonnets. As class 1's repaint more and more of their "old" personalities, it is only a matter of time before all the Warbonnets are nothing but history. BNSF 777 brings up the tail end of BNSF's Denver-Provo under cloudy morning skies at East Rocky.

It is an absolutely beautiful Colorado morning, particularly considering it is the start of December! With temperatures around 55°F, this Provo-Denver manifest leaves Rocky on a clear signal. C44-9Ws used to rule BNSF manifest on the Moffat. However, they are already starting to become outdated as more and more "Evolution Series" units are showing up! Nice to catch a Dash-9 on the point on this morning.

Not much of a mystery where this shot was taken! In the late 1990s, after the UP/SP merger, UP assigned unique IDs to every control point on the former Rio Grande (and all of Espee). While most of the Grande trackage got an "RG" prefix (for Rio Grande), the tracks between Denver and Range got the "DS" prefix (for Denver & Salt Lake). The reason being because Tennessee Pass got the "RG" prefix, and milepost number on Tennessee Pass and the Moffat are duplicated. So the prefix was changed to avoid confusion.

Of the four "big" US Class 1 railroads (UP, BNSF, CSX, and NS), CSX is probably the railroad I have the fewest pictures of. In general, Norfolk Southern units seems to find their way more frequently than CSX (and typically on BNSF). However, that is slowly changing as this coal train has appeared on the Moffat three times since September. Each time with CSX units for power. Hopefully, that trend will continue!

As this CSX-led coal train reached the east end of Rocky, the sun just barely started to peek out from behind the early morning clouds. The blue and yellow of CSX's Dark Future paint scheme doesn't look half bad on the Moffat, eh?

A trio of GP40-2s (two ex-DRGW and one ex-Espee) glide out of Rocky on the journey back east toward North Yard. There is only one industry still served by the West Local. The aggregate plant at the north end of the Rocky Spur. As such, the West Local is typically only 1-4 cars in length. In addition, it typically only runs one out of every 2-3 Wednesdays. A decade ago, when Rocky Flats was still being cleaned up, the local ran for four units twice a week and sometimes had as many as 35 cars. Oh, how times have changed! Why have three units for such a short train? The same used are used on the South Local as well (when three units are often needed). It is easier to keep them together then break them up just for the Wednesday run.

UP 1349, leading the West Local out of Rocky here, is no stranger to Colorado. Or, for that matter, the Moffat. This is ex-DRGW 3128. It has managed to hang around Denver almost exclusively since the days of the Rio Grande!

Last Saturday, the westbound Zephyr had to stop at Rocky and inspect one of the Superliners. Upon inspection, major flat spots were discovered on the wheels. Major enough that the Superliner had to be set out at Rocky. As of this morning, three days later, the Superliner was still sitting at Rocky. It will likely remain here until the car shop can get a crew out and change the wheels out on site. The car shouldn't roll on the rails and it could damage the track and/or possibly derail.

At the beginning of the 21st Century, the least Utah Railway had on their SD40s expired. In 2001, they received six MK5000Cs. These unique units were rebuilds by Morrison Knudsen. In 2003, their MK prime movers were replaced with EMD prime movers and they were redesignated as MK50-3s. At the end of 2016, Utah Railway lost their last coal contract and a century of coal hauling for the railroad came to an end. As a result, their MK50-3s are being sent to the KYLE railroad in eastern Colorado.
