The train would continue to Utah Junction, where it waited on the North Yard Siding for Amtrak, before continuing into the yard. It is a beautiful morning in the Denver-area here at the start of fall. A trio of GEs (including an ES44C4 on the point) glide east on the point of a Provo, UT to Lincoln, NE manifest. The train is approaching the Simms Street grade crossing, one of several "quiet zone" crossing that are now in the city of Arvada. This particular manifest is one that has become quite rare these days. It originated from Phippsburg on the Craig Branch and is referred to as the "P-Burg Local". There are some industries on the Craig Branch, other than coal mines, that do ship goods by rail. So this train shows up every 1-4 weeks (yes, that's it!), depending on demand on the branch. Yet here is one such as example on an eastbound manifest. This unit, previously SP 310, was patched over 10 years ago, in June 2004. A CSX AC4400CW, delivered in early 1995, was spending a little time on UP. In order to easily distinguish units with AC traction motors (instead of DC), CSX paints a lighting bolt on the cab. When conditions tend to be overcast, a "sucker hole" refers to a break in the clouds that lights up the tracks, offering great light on the subject. On this afternoon, I managed to catch a great "sucker cloud"! Lighting at this spot was perfect until about 30 seconds before this Denver to Provo showed up. Ah well...there's always next time. As a result, it has been quite awhile since seeing one of these CREX leasers around. But this one just happened to make an appearance as a DPU on the back of the daily Denver-Provo. This Friday was an exception as a total of 13 trains ran through the Moffat Tunnel. Three of them are visible right here in this shot! An eastbound Lincoln to Provo manifest sits int he siding at Rocky, having just received a relief crew out of Denver. Gotta love the single box car cut in the otherwise-perfect unit tank train! At least, I missed that era as far as photography goes. I still remember train chasing with my dad. I'd have to say that the C44-9W was the replacement for the C30-7, as far as its popularity goes, with railroads in the 1990s and early 2000s. While that era is also on its way out, you can still find plenty of "Crash-9s", as they are sometimes (unaffectionately) referred to, on BNSF trains.
