At this point, the crew will switch from channel 2323 to channel 1414 and move from UP DS-82 to UP DS-86. Five GEs are in the command of the trains, which is primarily composed of tank cars. (Note: Channel 1414 being used between Prospect Jct and Rocky for DS-86 is a recent change. It had been channel 9292, but was changed due to the amount of radio traffic on 9292). If you noticed the signal at Rocky is dark, it is because the approach lit circuit has quite kicked in yet to activate the signal! They typically weigh somewhere around 7,000 tons and that is all uphill between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel. Here, a ballast train has a clear signal at the east switch of Rocky. The weather condition were deteriorating rapidly with the first few snow flakes just starting to fall. The Denver/Roper trains lately are led by the kind of AC power you see on most coal trains. Although there are only two units on the point, there was indeed a third (DPU) unit - an SD9043MAC - on the end of the train. Yep, it happened for a very short time between the fall of 1997 and the deactivation of most of the C30-7's in 1998 and 1999. This was also before BNSF started using DPU on its westbound manifests on the Moffat. Manned helpers would push the train up the hill to East Portal where they would cut off and return to Denver.
