With sunset not far off, an eastbound unit oil train rounds Big Ten Curve. The hoppers you see have been sitting there for over 40 years! They are filled with dirt and are welded to the rails.

An unit oil train makes its way around Big Ten Curve as it continues its journey east. As the demand for coal has been decreasing, the demand for oil has been increasing! A new oil load out has been built at Wash (just outside Wellington, UT). Currently, the load out is producing about a train a week. Rumor has it the goal is get production up to a train a day.

An eastbound (loaded) unit oil train progresses east through Little Ten Curve at Rocky. The back of the train is headed north (geographically) while the front is headed east. Note the buffer car (a covered hopper) located behind the power.

Ten years ago, I'm not sure anyone would have predicted that unit coal trains on the Moffat would be on the decline while unit oil trains would be on the rise! A very new (delivered in 2014) SD70AH leads this particular set of oil cans at East Rocky.

Say hello so the SD70AH. What makes this unit different from an SD70ACe? 7,000 pounds! For a long time, various railroads have, at times, increased the weight of certain locomotives to try to increase their tractive effort. Such is the case with the SD70AH. EMD increased the thickness of the steel frame, adding the 7,000 pounds.

Interestingly, I got a picture of UP 8923 back in 2007. That was a different unit, however. At that time, UP 8923 was an SD90MAC that was waiting to be sold off. Check out the picture in the "Additional Photos" below.

A new take on a common location: Barbara's Gulch. Until recently, this shot would have required a fair amount of hiking. However, with the community of Leyden Rock under construction, you can get this shot from 87th Drive. In the shot, an eastbound unit oil train is coming up to the east end of Barbara's Gulch.

An eastbound oil train passes by the location of what used to be Mesa Oil. This industry was served by UP's West Local. However, it moved to Denver a few years ago and is now served by the Denver and Rock Island. Mesa Oil allegedly moved because they were unhappy with UP's service.
