There are a number of reasons this might happen. The top two generally are either that the yard in Denver is not yet prepared to receive the train, and/or the crew on the train does not have enough time left on the clock to make it in to the yard before "dying" (hitting their hours of service). So, although the West Local has toned up the dispatcher to request permission to enter the main track at Rocky, they have not yet heard back. The main reason for the delay was the 3rd and 4th unit in this shot. Those units had actually been sitting in Track 5 at Denver Union Station for the past week or two. However, the prime mover has long since been replaced with a standard 4400 HP prime mover, and the unit itself has been rebuilt and is now designated as an C44ACM on UP's roster. The train is in the siding to allow the westbound Zephyr to run around the train. However, the Zephyr is running late getting out of town, and after 35 minutes, the train will continue up to Plain to let the Zephyr run around it there. As I thought a bit about it, I realized the irony of an oil train overtaking a coal train, as oil has very much overtaken coal and the primary unit bulk trains found on the Moffat. Some individual strips of rail lay on the ground. If you happen to be new to trains, this shot illustrates one way you can (in general) identify which track is the main line. If you look on the right two tracks, you can see angle bars...steel bars used to connect to pieces of track. The track Amtrak is on is welded rail, so each piece of track is 1/4 of a mile long! Pretty sure it is the first time I have ever (in the Denver area) shot the eastbound Zephyr in the morning and the westbound Zephyr in the afternoon. Due to severe winter weather in California on Donner Pass, as well as additional delays in Nevada and Utah, the Zephyr is running an astonishing 17 hours late through the snowy scene.
