An empty BNSF oil train makes its way west on the main at Rocky. Oil trains have rather disappeared from the Moffat in the last year or so, but have suddenly reappeared at the end of 2019 and start of 2020.

With the entire train (all five cars of it, along with the power) back on the mainline at Rocky, crew members work to lock up the switch for the main and the derail (out of frame). Once complete, the crew members will hop on and the train will make the 14 mile journey back to North Yard in Denver.

The switch for the Rocky Spur (off the main) is roughly even with the west switch for the house track on the siding. Before continuing back to town, one of the crew members will align the derail on the spur (toward the bottom of the frame) back to the derail position. Just in case any cars come rolling down the spur.

The privately own passenger car Sierra Hotel was on the back of the Westbound Zephyr on this morning. It is a bitter sweet trip for the Sierra Hotel as this is the final trip for the car. It will head back to Chicago on the back of the Eastbound Zephyr in a few days. The car's owner has been running it for 27 years and has said that it is time to retire it.

Coming through Little Ten Loop, this rail train - interestingly running without a buffer car - is making its way west toward the west switch of Rocky.

This loaded rail train is restricted to 40 MPH, which should be no problem for these two units on the point. The train is about halfway through Rocky, passing the west end of the house track and the switch to the Rocky Spur.

A pair of ES44C4s lead a loaded rail train west at Rocky. Many people jokingly said rumor would start that BNSF is taking over maintenance on the Moffat, but this is just a train heading for San Bernardino in California and is taking the former Grande for routing.

BNSF made an interesting routing choice with loaded rail train. The train is headed for San Bernardino in California, but to get there will run west to Stockton, CA and then south over Tehachapi, through Barstow, and down Cajon to San Bernardino.

A very long MRONY heads east on the main at Rocky. As the head end approaches the east signal, the tail end of the train has not yet come in to view back at Little Ten Loop. This may be the final (regular) UP manifest of this length on the Moffat. The MNYRO and MRONY are no more after this rain arrives in North Yard. UP will now run an MNYGJ and MGJNY for cars in Grand Junction, but that train is likely to be shorter. No more UP manifests on Solider Summit...

I have always found rail trains to be very interesting. It is cools how each rail stretches from the start of the flat cars (the green cars) to the end. The rails simply bend as the train goes around curves.

Intermodal trains of any variety haven't been found on the Moffat in 15 years. However, once in a blue moon, UP or BNSF will route a baretable over the Moffat. If you haven't heard of such a creature before, a baretable is one of the lowest priority trains you'll find on the rails. It earns no revenue for the railroad as it is a "repositioning" move. These well cars are needed at BNSF's Logistics Park intermodal facility in Kansas.

The suburb of Arvada has expanded to the north and west quite a bit in the last five years. The new neighborhood of Candelas is the main neighborhood seen here in the background of the Winter Park Express heading west through Rocky.

The morning sun glistens of the sides of the eight Superliners devoted to the Winter Park Express "Ski Train" for the 2018 ski season. The track above the train is the Rocky Spur, which now services a single customer at the far north end almost five miles away.

This massive Provo-Denver (with six units on the point and one DPU on the tail end) had to stop and tie down here at Rocky. At the time, BNSF had no room train in the yard. A van is coming out from Denver to pick up the crew and take them to their hotel. When the yard is ready, a Denver-based crew will come out and take the train the remaining 17 or so miles in to the yard.
