From this vantage point of UP's MGJNY on the main at Rocky, you can also see the track for the Rocky Spur (or Rocky Flats Industrial Lead). The spur runs nearly five miles to the north, The Acosta aggregate plant on the north end of the spur ships by rail. Or, at least, it did...the West Local hasn't serviced the plant in several months, making it seem as though the plant is no longer shipping by rail. Note the derail, collected aligned to the derail position to protect the mainline.

Whenever a train is tied down in a siding along the mainline, a derail is always set. As you can see here, a derail does exactly what it sounds like. It is intentionally causes the train to derail. Should something fail, resulting in the train rolling without a crew, it will derail here, on the siding, before it can roll out onto the main, possibly striking another train, or derailing in a populated area.

BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest is typically configured in a 3x2 setup. However, this instance of the train is significantly shorter than most, so BNSF apparently decided to run it with five units all on the point. The train tied down in the siding at Rocky about six hours ago, and it is waiting for a crew to come out of Denver and take it the rest of the way into town.
