The westbound Zephyr, with the Denver skyline in the distance, is coming around the south edge of Big Ten. On this particular morning, the FRA has one of their inspection cars, DOTX 221 on the train behind the power.

The westbound California Zephyr has come to a stop, facing a double red signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay). There is a track occupancy on the main track between switches at Eisele, so DS-380 is going to need to flag the Zephyr by signal at the east end.

Grabbing a quick roster shot of AMTK 179 as the paint scheme actually looks quite good (and quite clean). In the distance, a BNSF oil train is tied down in the siding at Rocky.

A look at one of the Federal Railroad Administration's inspection cars, DOTX 221, as it sits behind the power and ahead of the baggage car on the westbound California Zephyr. The FRA has a couple of inspection cars that are often sent out to inspect the rails all across the United States. These cars are sometimes on Amtrak, and sometimes just on freight trains.

AMTK 199, leading the California Zephyr, has come to a stop just east of Eisele (Clay). As you can see in this shot, the Zephyr is looking at a double red signal at the east end. There is an erroneous track occupancy between switches on the main ahead, and DS-380 is going to give the Zephyr authority to pass the red signal.

After receiving authority, via PTC, to proceed past a red signal, AMTK 199 is throttling up so the train can continue at restricted speed on the main. Note the FRA inspection car (DOTX 221), directly behind the power.

After proceeding through Eisele (Clay) on the main at restricted speed, due to an erroneous track occupancy, the Zephyr is accelerating now that it is back on a green signal. FRA inspection car DOTX 221 is in tow this morning.

Whenever a train is tied down in a siding along the mainline, a derail is always set. As you can see here, a derail does exactly what it sounds like. It is intentionally causes the train to derail. Should something fail, resulting in the train rolling without a crew, it will derail here, on the siding, before it can roll out onto the main, possibly striking another train, or derailing in a populated area.

This is one of the more interesting covered hoppers you might come across. It looks like a box car that was modified to be a covered hopper. Regardless, on this particular day, it is serving as a buffer car between the head end power and the loaded oil train behind it.

After six months of being tied down in the siding at Leyden, 41 gondolas are about to be taken back to Denver by the West Local. The conductor is adding the EOT (End Of Train) device to the end of the string of gondolas. The power for the local is waiting on the main. Note the rust that has gathered on the siding after six months of not being used.

A GP40N and a GP38N are power on the West Local. This is the first time the West Local has been called in months, save for about a week ago when it came out and picked up half the gondolas being stored at Leyden. Today, it has again been called to come out to Leyden and pick up the 41 remaining gondolas still tied down in storage at Leyden.
