The westbound Zephyr is right on time as it knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Plain. The Zephyr is running with seven Superliners, but rumor has it that Amtrak plans to expand that to nine sometime in the not-to-distant future.

AMTK 126 and AMTK 194 head west roughly halfway through Plain, rounding the curve to run through Rainbow Cut. Interestingly, the door on the long cab of AMTK 126 must not have been latched tight.

There was a temperature inversion along the Front Range this morning, and the City of Boulder is currently buried in clouds. Passengers aboard the Zephyr, heading into Tunnel 4, have a somewhat unique view of the plains.

The eastbound Zephyr is running right on time as it approaches the west portal of Tunnel 1. The train just had to run through the siding at Plain to run around a loaded UP oil train that was holding on the main.

The Zephyr wraps through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon on its way east toward Denver. It is way more common for the eastbound Zephyr to be late into Denver than the westbound Zephyr. But this evening, the train is running right on time.

A westbound UP oil empty is in the siding at Eisele (Clay). Fortunately, this particular oil train is short enough to fit between switches. The third unit on the oil train is kicking up a bit of exhaust while idling. The conductor of the oil train is on the ground to give the eastbound Zephyr a roll by, making sure he does not spot any problems. The oil train will be stuck here for two more eastbounds: a loaded oil train, and the Winter Park Express.

After the eastbound Zephyr ran around this UP oil train at Plain, it is now the oil trains turn to continue east. The crew will tie the train down on Bypass 1 between C&S and Broadway.

It feels uncommon to catch a meet between two UP trains on the Moffat, simply because UP has run few trains in the last few years. However, as oil trains are increasing on the Moffat, it is becoming easier to catch a meet between UP trains. Such is the case on this afternoon, as a westbound oil empty holds in the siding at Eisele (Clay) as a loaded oil train rolls by.

This westbound oil train has to wait in the siding at Eisele (Clay) for one more eastbound before it is its turn to continue. While waiting, we see an eastbound loaded oil train descending Big Ten Curve in the distance.

I thought this was a cool shot of the head end of a westbound UP oil empty in the siding at Eisele (Clay), while a loaded UP oil train continues east on the main at Rocky. A pair of DPUs are bringing up the tail end of that eastbound oil train. The westbound in the foreground is waiting on the final run of the Winter Park Express for the season.

Emerging from Tunnel 2, the last run of the Winter Park Express for the season faces a clear (green) signal at the west end of Plain. The train is having a great run back to Denver. It will end up arriving back in Denver about 25 minutes early.

The eastbound Winter Park Express passes through the very appropriately named Rainbow Cut. From this picture, you can probably see how the cut got its name. The colors of the rock seams nearly cover the entire spectrum of the rainbow.

As the final run of the Winter Park Express Ski Train for the 2024-2025 season makes its way around Little Ten Curve at Rocky, we see a westbound oil train that the Ski Train met at Eisele (Clay). DS-378 has given the oil train a green signal, and it is starting to pull west, out the west end of the siding.

The eastbound Winter Park Express passes by BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest, currently tied down in the siding at Rocky. Meanwhile, in the distance, we see the tail end of a westbound oil train that is departing the siding at Eisele (Clay).
