This is a classic shot from the Moffat, but one that I never really get tired of! This eastbound BNSF manifest is on clear (green) signals on the main at Rocky. The DPUs at the end of the train are headed geographically north, but will soon wrap through Little Ten Curve, following the rest of the train eastbound.

UP 8854 is holding on the main at the west end of Rocky. Why is it holding on the main? Because it will be meeting an eastbound oil train that is currently above it, on the main at Eisele (Clay). Usually, the first train to arrive for a meet would take the siding, but in this case, the eastbound will hold the siding at Rocky for the westbound Zephyr. The flag on UP 8854 has definitely seen better days.

Three units lead a westbound oil train at Rocky. The train has no DPUs on the tail end, so it'll have to pick up some after it loads at Wellington, UT, before it departs east. There is a bit of overgrowth on the Rocky Spur leading up the hill from the main at Rocky.

The first run of the Winter Park Express meets BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest, waiting in the siding at Rocky. With the Ski Train now clear of the east switch of Rocky, DS-380 is already setting up a signal for the manifest to depart eastbound and continue in to Denver.

Not even 30 minutes after the sun crested the eastern horizon, BNSF's Provo-Denver is slowly rolling through the siding at Rocky. Interestingly, the train has a quintet of SD70ACes leading it east.

I think this might just be one of the most unique pictures I've ever taken! This eastbound BNSF manifest is stopped on the main at Rocky due to a mechanical issue. While it was stopped (and I was waiting around as well), this gentleman flying a paraglider showed up! With a propeller strapped to his back and a parachute ("wing") overhead, he propelled his way down the siding at Rocky, alongside the stopped manifest!

With the short winter days and tower Rocky Mountains to the west, much of Eisele (Clay) is pushed into the shadows by 2:30pm. By 3:00pm, much of Big Ten and Little Curves are in the shadows. And, as you can see, at 3:30pm, the shadows are nearing the head end of this eastbound BNSF manifest, currently stopped on the main due to a mechanical issue.

This GP39-3 (rebuilt from a GP39-2) has likely been assigned as a switcher in either Grand Junction or Provo. It is also likely due for a 92-day FRA inspection, and is therefore being taken to Denver on this Provo-Denver manifest. The unit was shut down, and simply enjoying the ride this afternoon.

This eastbound BNSF manifest went into emergency when it was coming around Big Ten. The conductor walked the train and, a short time later, the train slow-rolled down and stopped on the main between switches at Rocky. I did not have a scanner at the time, so I did not hear what was wrong. But, at the time of this shot, the train continue to sit on the main.

A fairly decent sized herd of elk are enjoying the morning on the north side of the rails. The engineer let the conductor know so, in turn, the conductor could announce the herd to the passenger so they could try to get a view of them. The Zephyr is on time on the main at Rocky.

90 minutes before this picture was taken, there was a thick layer of low clouds completely obscuring this view. The cold also contributed to a bit of frost that has formed on a lot of the foliage. The sun has now burned off the clouds as the morning Zephyr charges west on the main at Rocky alongside the house track.

BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest is waiting in the siding at Rocky for the westbound Zephyr. The conductor got off the lead unit and is waiting for the Zephyr to show up so he can conduct a roll by. The power on the manifest is set up in a 5x0 configuration instead of the more-typical 3x2 configuration. The train is also quite a bit shorter than the average train.

With a new (dummy) wheel set placed under BNSF 5767, crews are very slowly starting to lower the front end of the unit back down to the rails and onto the waiting wheel set. Once complete, the crews will pack up and head back to Denver. The unit will remain on the house track at Rocky until a train, most likely a BNSF Provo-Denver, can pick up the unit and take it back to Denver.

A CAT front loader has a bad wheel set and traction motor on a chain. This was just removed from BNSF 5767, sitting in the house track at Rocky. The loader will take the wheel set to a flat bed truck that is waiting to receive the wheel set so it can be taken back to Denver.

A wheel set with a bad traction motor has been removed from BNSF 5767 and has also been removed from the rails that will take it to a flatbed truck, waiting to receive it. A dummy wheel set has been placed under the unit, and it will soon be lower back down.
