AMTK 157 and AMTK 25 lead the westbound Zephyr at West Eisele (Clay). The train has a baggage car, a Transition Sleeper, three regular Sleepers, a Dining Car, a Lounge Car, and three Coach Cars. This was the summer standard before COVID, and it looks like Amtrak is moving back to this as the standard Zephyr consist.

About 10 years ago, Amtrak increased the cost of hauling private cars on their long distance trains. They also put in a few other rules and regulations, and reduced the number of stops where private cars could be picked up or dropped off. As a result, the number of private cars on the Zephyr have decreased quite a bit. In fact, the two most common private cars to show up on the Moffat the past few years seem to be the Patrick Henry cars, the Evelyn Henry and Warren Henry. Here, both cars are again headed west on the Moffat at the west switch of Eisele (Clay).

The engineer on UP's MGJNY has dimmed the headlight as the train approaching the westbound Zephyr at the west end of Eisele (Clay). One of the two engineers on the westbound Zephyr is climbing down from the cab to give a roll by to the eastbound manifest.

One of my favorite effects of a snowstorm is the changing of the landscape from color to (seemingly) black and white. UP's armor yellow paint stands out strong against the snowy backdrop of the mountain here at the west switch of Eisele (Clay).

After PTC causing a "penalty application" of the brakes (incorrectly), bringing the train to a stop at both West Crescent and West Plain, the system behaved properly here at West Eisele (Clay). The train passed the clear (green) signal at the west end, and continued rolling east.

UP's MGJNY wraps through the S-Curves around Blue Mountain Drive, although much of the train is barely visible, obscured by the crazy, late-April snow currently falling hard.

After proceeding through Eisele (Clay) on the main at restricted speed, due to an erroneous track occupancy, the Zephyr is accelerating now that it is back on a green signal. FRA inspection car DOTX 221 is in tow this morning.

A westbound UP oil empty is in the siding at Eisele (Clay). Fortunately, this particular oil train is short enough to fit between switches. The third unit on the oil train is kicking up a bit of exhaust while idling. The conductor of the oil train is on the ground to give the eastbound Zephyr a roll by, making sure he does not spot any problems. The oil train will be stuck here for two more eastbounds: a loaded oil train, and the Winter Park Express.

The temperature is 26°F (-3°C) this morning, as the Zephyr leaves Eisele (Clay) and passes through a scene of powdered white frost. The train lost about 45 minutes trying to get to the station in Denver, waiting for the (late) Ski Train to depart. It is now about 1 hour and 15 minutes behind schedule.

While there was not a lot of snowfall overnight, there was a log of fog. That fog turned to freezing fog when polar airs brought the temperature down to close to 0°F (-18°C). That resulted in a lot of rime ice forming on the vegetation. Here, at 11am, the temperature is still only 10°F (-12°C) out. That along with the overcast skies are keeping the rime ice on the trees and plants as the westbound Zephyr comes through the scene at West Eisele (Clay).

The Denver area has had several unseasonably warm days in the last week. As a result, nearly all the snow in the area has melted away. However, there is still plenty of snow to be had in the Colorado high country, which is where skiers on the Winter Park Express are headed as the train departs Eisele (Clay).
