I love getting shots of train in blizzard conditions! You'd think there'd be more opportunities for such shots in the Denver area...and some winters you'd be correct. This has not been one of those winters though. It has been very warm and dry. This is the first really snowy morning of February as the westbound Zephyr approaches the crossing at Blue Mountain Road.

Denver seems to be a good hangout for Warbonnets lately. They have come through on several trains, including on the Moffat. No complaints here! Glad to see some of them still looking so great after so many years.

I was hoping the DPU on the tail end of this eastbound BNSF manifest would have been in view on the descent from Tunnel 1. Alas, the train was not quite long enough for that to happen. Regardless, the train looks mighty fine as it heads east past the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest winds through the S-Curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon with a highly colorful consist! The train sports 8 units on the point, including a Warbonnet, a CSX, and a Norfolk Southern.

An SD70ACe and an ES44AC bring up the tail end of this eastbound coal load. Typically, UP coal trains on the Moffat run 3x2x1, but this train is different as it is not headed east on the KP. Instead, it is going to the Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver. That plant is close to converting entirely to natural gas. Once that happens, and this coal train stops running, it is rumored that the Energy Coal Mine may shut down. If that happens, it will spell the end of coal on the Craig Branch!

My least favorite type of day, weather-wise, for pictures. Overcast with flat, white clouds. No real features or anything. But, beggars can't be choosers! And regardless of the weather, I'm not going to turn down the opportunity to grab a shot of an eastbound coal load at Blue Mountain.

As the head end of this eastbound coal train approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain, the mid-train swing helpers are clearly visible in the background...a shot that actually may not be possible too much longer as Colorado coal continues to drop off.

For decades, coal was a staple on the Moffat. Back when it was Rio Grande, then Espee, and finally UP. But if there is one thing consistent about life, it is change. Only half a dozen or so coal trains have come east thus far in the month of February.

A westbound loaded sand train makes its way west through the S-Curves at Coal Creek. These sand trains are, understandably, very heavy! Three units on the point and two on the back are just enough to make about 15 MPH up the hill.

Whether it be sunny or shady, there's really never a bad time to come across a Warbonnet! One of the 20 Warbonnets delivered in the 4700 number range, the paint job here on 4716 still looks fantastic.

A westbound BNSF sand train approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road in rather harsh evening lighting. The Warbonnet certain makes for a nice add. If only it were leading...

Here is a sight that you don't see every day! A Canadian Pacific unit rolls through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain on the Moffat. The unit is bringing up the rear of the eastbound Roper to North Yard manifest.

I never pass up the opportunity to grab a roster shot of an SD70M. This is my personal favorite EMD six-axle unit since the SD40T-2 (and SD40-2). I particularly like the Tier 1 compliant units, which have the slightly-flared radiators, reminiscent of the SD45.

As Colorado is right smack in the middle of winter, "Blue Mountain" looks to be more like "Brown/Yellow" mountain as an eastbound Roper, UT to North Yard, CO manifest makes its way on by east.

In your face! UP 5833 heads toward the Blue Mountain Road grade crossing. This shot of the train apparently headed straight for the camera is made possible with the magic of a telephoto lens! The photographer is actually well off to the side of the tracks for this 400mm shot.
