I try to make it a point to get as many of these CitiRail leasers on film (well, electronics...but you get the point) as I can. There is a good chance that these will have totally disappeared within a couple of years. Plus, it is quite a wild paint scheme and, like most railfans, I love getting shots of wild paint schemes!

After a couple weeks of frigid temperatures and quite a bit of snow, things thawed out a bit in mid-February! Most of the snow is gone and the temperature is close to 60°F as this westbound oil train, led by a pair of Kansas City Southern SD70ACes approach the Blue Mountain grade crossing.

A pair of good looking Retro-Belle KCS SD70ACes lead up a westbound oil train as it makes its way through the S-Curves west of Eisele (formerly Clay) on the approach to the Blue Mountain Road crossing. As the sole power on the train, these guys sounded mighty fine.

Here is a scene you don't see everyday! A Norfolk Southern unit crossing Blue Mountain Road on the way west on the Moffat. I intentionally cut out the second (BNSF) unit from the frame to make the scene that much more unusual!

Interesting story behind this westbound BNSF manifest. As it was headed west through Leyden, one of the three units developed a problem. The train crawled at 12 MPH to Rocky and stopped on the main. Ultimately, BNSF ran this Norfolk Southern unit west to Rocky where the crew attached it to the point of the train, and the train continued heading west.

I knew this shot was going to be backlit, but I'm actually really pleased with the results! A pair of SD70ACes lead a trio of GEs on a westbound coal empty at Blue Mountain Road Crossing. The trees still carry a touch of powder with them from a snowstorm a day earlier.

While the lighting isn't exactly ideal, the Tier 4 ET44C4 is still too new to ignore! Some of the distinguishing items include the slight bulge just ahead of the radiators on the long hood and the four grills on the radiator intake. Although it is difficult to tell from this angle, the radiator housing is taller (coming to more of a point) as well.

Just another C44-9W? Well, yes...but this one has a bit more of a story. Until February 2001, this unit was Scarlet and Gray! Delivered as SP 8188 in November 1994, this unit spent over six years as an Espee unit before getting patched (and later repainted) in Armour Yellow.

Union Pacific has rebuilt a good portion of their fleet of SD40-2s, giving them new life on the rails! After the rebuild, the units are now designated as SD40Ns. One such example was on the eastbound MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO). It is so amazing to not only see SD40-2s still on Class One rails in 2015, but to see them flourishing!

A look at the Boy Scouts of America unit leading the MRONY. The Boy Scouts started in 1910 and, in 2010, Union Pacific renumbered one of its ES44ACs to 2010 and tweaked the scheme to celebrate 100 years in scouting.

I have been very fortunate in that I've managed to capture nearly every specially painted Union Pacific unit (since 2000) on "film". Prior to October 7, 2015, there were two I was still missing. The Breast Cancer Awareness unit (UP 7400) and the Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary unit (UP 2010). UP 2010 was knocked off that list when it led the MRONY down the Moffat. A break in the clouds allowed for fantastic lighting on the unit here at Blue Mountain.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Utah Railway
At this point, I'd have to say that Utah Railway is my favorite short line railroad out there. It reminds me of Rio Grande and the cool operating agreement the two railroads had (and Utah Railway and UP continue to have) over Soldier Summit. So, on rare occasion, when a Utah engine makes its way to Colorado, it is always good to see. Unfortunately, when this GP40 returns to Utah, it will most likely be wearing the orange paint scheme of the Genesee and Wyoming. Genesee and Wyoming (which owns over a dozen short line railroads in the US) has owned Utah Railway since 2002.
