An eastbound Provo, UT to Denver, CO manifest emerges from Tunnel 1 with a fairly typical consist on the head end. An ES44C4 leads the way, followed by a pair of C44-9Ws.

On a frigid December morning, an eastbound BNSF manifest winds its way through the S-curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. You can see the back half of the train, descending from Tunnel One in the distance. The detector at MP 22.6 revealed the temperature to be 14°F.

A brand new ET44C4 (Tier 4 compliant) and a C44-9W bring up the rear of an eastbound manifest. The DPUs are descending from Tunnel One and will soon loop around the tracks at the base of Coal Creek Canyon and Blue Mountain Road. In the foreground, you can see the ends of a flat car!

While the lighting isn't exactly ideal, the Tier 4 ET44C4 is still too new to ignore! Some of the distinguishing items include the slight bulge just ahead of the radiators on the long hood and the four grills on the radiator intake. Although it is difficult to tell from this angle, the radiator housing is taller (coming to more of a point) as well.

After arriving on the MRONY the day before, UP 1996 is headed back west as the sole DPU on the tail end of the MNYRO. The train got stuck in the siding at Plain for awhile. An eastbound BNSF manifest came by on the main and met Amtrak at Eisele (formerly Clay). DS-82 held the MNYRO in the siding at Plain to allow the Zephyr to pass by on the main. That is exactly what is happening here as the Zephyr heads west.

After a 45 minute wait at Plain, the MNYRO is now pulling west out of the siding on a clear signal. Bringing up the tail end is UP 1996, the Southern Pacific heritage unit. The unit led the MRONY into town the previous day. Its stay was short and the Daylight scheme-inspired unit looked mighty fine bringing up the rear of the train on this chilly, snowy morning.

After meeting a train and then having a train (the Zephyr) overtake it, UP 1996 is throttling up and pushing on the tail end of the MNYRO-29 (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Roper, UT). It was really nice seeing the Espee Heritage Unit while it was here in Colorado. In all likelihood, it will be assigned to a train that will not bring it back to Colorado once it reaches Salt Lake City.

In the hour or so that I was out in search of UP 1996, I wound up shooting four trains. These days, that represents an incredibly busy morning on the Moffat, which is quite sad! This is the fourth train of the morning. A westbound BNSF manifest coming around the bend out of Barbara's Gulch and toward a clear signal at East Rocky.

This is, by far, the best shot of a Tier 4 unit that I've been able to capture to date. This is a slight variation on the standard ET44ACs that GE is now producing. This is an ET44C4 which, like the ES44C4, has a "dummy" center axle on both trucks. So the unit has an A1A-A1A truck configuration. The center axle on each truck can be slightly raised, putting more weight on the drive axles. A computer controls this action depending on grade, speed, traction, etc.

On a clear, chilly December morning, a trio of GEs head up this BNSF manifest as it knocks down the clear signal at the east switch of Rocky.
