So this is what constitutes a train on the Moffat in 2016, eh? This light power move is actually headed for Phippsburg on the Craig Branch. UP runs coal trains that are "captive" to the Craig Branch. Essentially, the trains run from the Axial Mine to the Ute and Hayden power plants. All of this is located on the branch. The power used on those trains needs to be switched out from time-to-time (for maintenance, etc). So this power will be left in Phippsburg and, in a few days, the current shuttle power will likely run light back to Denver.

Even though the Moffat has been extremely slow lately, this is one train that has appeared with semi-regularity. This is a Rock Salt train that is headed for Nephi, UT. While it doesn't necessarily run too often, it does seem to be fairly consistent so far in 2016. Plus, these types of trains frequently have SD70Ms on them! Always a plus in my book.

This westbound rock salt train is slowing on the main at Leyden as it approaches a red signal at the west end. A UP manager was riding along with the crew from Denver out to this point. At west Leyden, the manager hopped off the train and DS-86 set up a signal for the train to continue west.

Interesting story behind this westbound BNSF manifest. As it was headed west through Leyden, one of the three units developed a problem. The train crawled at 12 MPH to Rocky and stopped on the main. Ultimately, BNSF ran this Norfolk Southern unit west to Rocky where the crew attached it to the point of the train, and the train continued heading west.

Here is a scene you don't see everyday! A Norfolk Southern unit crossing Blue Mountain Road on the way west on the Moffat. I intentionally cut out the second (BNSF) unit from the frame to make the scene that much more unusual!

One of the BNSF units on this train is offline and not loading. Not sure which one, but the train had to stop at Rocky after developing an issue with one of the three units. BNSF's yard in Denver sent the Norfolk Southern unit west (light) to pop on the front of the train and assist in the journey west to Provo, UT.
