If the proposed UP/NS merger is ultimately approved, many more Norfolk Southern units might appears on the Moffat when the combined roster starts mixing between the two railroads. That is because this is one spot where westbounds are essentially headed geographically east. Regardless, this UP passenger train still looks great as it approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. It is already 80°F (27°C) this morning, with high temperatures expected to head toward 95°F (35°C) in the afternoon. Power on the Zephyr has been pretty "regular" of late, meaning the standard Phase 5 P42DCs. Nice to see something in a different scheme today. The train is a little over seven hours late today. The train departed Chicago roughly eight hours late the previous day, due to mechanical issues. Usually, the passenger cars are deadheading between Council Bluffs, IA and somewhere in California. That seems to be the case here, as nobody is actually on the train itself. The train is emerging from Tunnel 1, running on a Approach Diverging (yellow over yellow) signal, reading to take the siding at Plain. The train is deadheading 11 cars (plus a power car) from Council Bluff, IA west toward California. The train will spend the night tonight in Glenwood Springs. The train was expected to head west about six hours earlier, but some maintenance around town resulted in a much later departure west. When the Denver and Salt Lake (or, at the time, the Denver, Northwestern, and Pacific) first started investigating routes to head west through The Rockies, Coal Creek Canyon was one of the routes surveyed. The route would have necessitated a 2-3 mile long tunnel. As such, the route along the Front Range and South Boulder Canyon, through the Tunnel District, was chosen instead.
