A number board is missing and a bit of graffiti is on the long hood and fuel tank. An SD40-2 and GP40-2 are immediately behind the lead unit as the train approaches the west portal of Tunnel 1. As a result, I like to try to explore some different perspectives. The lower view up toward the tracks was just right for the Zephyr with AMTK 176 and AMTK 203 on the point. As has been the case for the past few years, the Ski Train is starting the season with just five Superliners (four coaches plus a lounge car). The train is just west of Tunnel 1 on a very moderate morning, with temperatures around 50°F (10°C) just six days before Christmas. It has been an unseasonably warm week with a lot of high winds. While the winds are not too bad right now, the temperature is already 60°F (16°C) at 10 o'clock in the morning in mid-December! The design and colors led railfans to adopt the nickname "Pepsi Can" for the scheme. Amtrak has applied a heritage version of the scheme on P42DC #160, leading the train toward Tunnel 1 this morning.
