On an overcast and rather gloomy morning, the westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. The FRA has an inspection car (DOTX 221) on the train this morning, checking out the rails as the train proceeds on its way.

The morning Zephyr is running right on time as it rounds the curve toward the east portal of Tunnel 1. AMTK 203 has a very unique paint scheme in honor of 50 years of the Operation Lifesaver program. The unit seems to show up on the Zephyr maybe once a year.

On a partly cloudy, beautiful March morning, the Winter Park Express glides west on the main track just west of Tunnel 1. The train has a straight shot up the hill to Winter Park.

Just on the west side of Tunnel 1, the Winter Park Express is moving along at track speed, making up a little time after a brief delay getting out of town. It would be successful, arriving at Winter Park only four minutes late.

The Winter Park Express emerges from the east portal of Tunnel 1. The final tunnel on the journey into Denver. The second P42DC is on the tail end of the train, making an interesting look with only a single unit on the point.

This scene has an almost other-worldly quality to it with rime ice stuck to the pine trees and a lot of the vegetation. The reddish dirt and rock stand in stark contrast as the 90 minute late westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. The little bit of fog floating around adds to the curiousness of the morning.

The Winter Park Express crests the hill on the climb to Tunnel 1. So far, no new homes from the Canyon Pines neighborhood have appears in the shot. Though for how much longer that will be the case is anyone's guess!

The California Zephyr emerges from the west portal of Tunnel 1. Right after a snow storm, when the ground is still covered in white and the skies are blue, is one of my favor conditions to shoot trains.

From above Tunnel 1, we see the California Zephyr as it climbs the roughly 2% from the base of Coal Creek Canyon up to the east portal of Tunnel 1. This, of course, is the first of 28 tunnels the train will pass through prior to reaching the Moffat Tunnel. Four inches of fresh snow remains on the ground and in the trees this morning, setting up a perfect winter scene.

When it comes to a picture of the Winter Park Express, you simply could not ask for better conditions! An arctic front moved in yesterday, bringing around four inches of snow and below zero temperatures. Today, thanks to the cold weather, the snow is sticking around under clear skies. The Ski Train is approaching the east portal of Tunnel 1 on its trip west.

Just west of Tunnel 1, AMTK 75 and AMTK 146 lead the Winter Park Express westbound. This season, with the train running five days a week, AMTK 75 will lead westbound on Friday and Sunday for one week, then least westbound on Thursday, Saturday, Monday the next. So both units will be on the point (on varying days) eastbound and westbound.

The Winter Park Express has just emerged from Tunnel 1 on its journey west to Winter Park. The train is running about 20 minutes early today. Passengers onboard have to be really happy they are not currently on I-70.
