It is just minutes before 5pm as the westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 1. The train is a little over seven hours late today. The train departed Chicago roughly eight hours late the previous day, due to mechanical issues. It has made up an hour of that delay on its journey west.

Slowly wrapping through S-Curve in the middle of Plain, the westbound Zephyr is slowing as it approaches a red signal at the west end. The eastbound Zephyr is out of Crescent, and will continue east on the main.

The westbound Zephyr has slowed to a stop in the siding at Plain. The train, now over seven hours late, is waiting on the eastbound Zephyr, which is out of Crescent. Alas, my battery was running low, so I was unable to get a shot of the meet with the eastbound Zephyr.

The westbound Zephyr is meeting an eastbound BNSF oil train here at Cliff. For those that remember the west switch of Cliff in the pre-UP days, the switch was a "Y" switch. Both main and siding slightly diverged from the single main track. However, UP reconfigured the switch to be more traditional, with the mainline being straight and the siding truly diverging.

Running over seven hours late, the westbound Zephyr is trying to make up time as best it can, making track speed as it hustles through the OS at the west end of Cliff.

After meeting a very late westbound Zephyr here at Cliff, this eastbound BNSF oil train is preparing to depart east. While DS-378 has set up a clear (green) signal out of Cliff, PTC is still showing a red. The engineer would log out of PTC and log back in, resolving the issue and allowing the oil train to depart eastbound.

The last few fleeting moments of sunlight on the main at the east end of Eisele (Clay) light up the lead units of this eastbound oil train. The train will continue to Denver without stopping, although it will meet a westbound UP manifest, holding at Arvada.

From the hill between Rocky and Eisele (Clay), we look up the slope at an eastbound BNSF oil train, just coming out of Eisele (Clay) and heading to the south edge of Big Ten Curve. There are some clouds building to the south, although they will not end up resulting in any significant precipitation.

This is a shot that I have come to really enjoy. The perspective with an eastbound coming around Big Ten with the Denver Skyline in the distance makes for a cool shot. BNSF 5888 is leading an eastbound oil load on the trip east. I think it is interesting that the number boards on the SD70ACe are inverse, with black numbers on white boards.

A trio of elephant-style BNSF units lead a loaded eastbound BNSF oil train through the S-curve on the north edge of Big Ten Curve toward a clear (green) signal at the west end of Rocky. The evening has brought with it partly cloudy skies. Fortunately at the moment, we are in the "partly" portion, great evening light cast on the eastbound.

Three units bring up the tail end of an eastbound oil train on Big Ten Curve. As has become relatively common of late, there is a Norfolk Southern unit mixed in with the two BNSF DPUs. Several of these oil trains are originating east of the Mississippi on Norfolk Southern. Not sure if that is the case for this train or not.

UP's MNYGJ departs North Yard for Grand Junction on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Typically, the crew is called in the late afternoon and it is quite common for the train to depart well after sunset. The best chance to get shots of the train in light are on the longest days of the year in summer. Such is the case on this day, as UP 6220 heads west out of Leyden. Of note, UP 6220 is no stranger to the Moffat, originally delivered as SP 113 in April 1995.

UP 1540 has likely just completed a regular inspection and is being transported back to Grand Junction on the MNYGJ. The GP40-2, now rebuilt as a GP40N, was delivered as WP 3550, just over 45 years ago in April 1980.

After meeting its counterpart, the MNYGJ, at Rocky, this eastbound UP manifest (the MGJNY) is headed for North Yard in Denver right at sunset. Clouds largely cover the western sky as a bit of sunset colors appear behind the train and the Rocky Mountains.
