The combined trainsets are reminiscent of 40 years ago in the 1980s when the California Zephyr was combined with the Pioneer and Desert Wind between Chicago and Salt Lake City. Off in the distance, you can clearly see the Valmont powerplant. The powerplant was fueled by coal when it was in operation. However, Xcel Energy shut the power plant down in 2017. For the first run in 2024, however, there is only asphalt and a few construction vehicles behind the westbound Ski Train on the main at Plain. However, the Zephyr is actually lined in to the siding here for the meet. If you look closely at the signal, you can see it shows a Diverging Approach (red over yellow). Dispatch has informed the train that they will meet the westbound Zephyr at Eisele (Clay) and dispatch is setting up the west switch for the oil train to hold the main. If you look in the distance, you'll notice take cars coming out of Tunnel 4. That is actually a second eastbound train. Specifically, BNSF's HPVODEN (Provo-Denver).
