The westbound Zephyr appears to be headed directly toward an eastbound UP coal load. However, the Zephyr is actually lined in to the siding here for the meet. If you look closely at the signal, you can see it shows a Diverging Approach (red over yellow).

After meeting the westbound Zephyr at Crescent, UP's MGJNY got a clear (green) signal to continue east toward North Yard in Denver. The lead unit has UP's newest paint scheme, which (sadly) no longer includes the famed UP wings.

The final westbound run of the Rocky Mountaineer for the 2023 season heads west on the main at Plain. For this final run, as has been the case for the past few runs, a pair of UP SD70Ms leads the train.

On a clear, beautiful September afternoon, an Officer's Special passes by a clear (green) signal at the east end of Plain on its way in to Denver. The stay in Denver should be just long enough for a crew change before the train continues north to Cheyenne.

The crew on this BNSF manifest has 90 minutes left to work before hitting their hours of service. Dispatch asked the crew if they could make it the 24 miles down to Prospect Jct in the time they have left if they get a straight shot. The crews response was "absolutely". So, the train is departing the siding at Plain on a clear (green) signal.

This UP oil train is departing Plain on an advanced approach (flashing yellow) signal. Dispatch has informed the train that they will meet the westbound Zephyr at Eisele (Clay) and dispatch is setting up the west switch for the oil train to hold the main. If you look in the distance, you'll notice take cars coming out of Tunnel 4. That is actually a second eastbound train. Specifically, BNSF's HPVODEN (Provo-Denver).

The westbound Zephyr glides west on the main at Plain, having just knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end. If you look closely in the distance, toward the top-right of the image, you can spot the east portal of Tunnel 4.

A UP Maintenance worker has a conversation with two people (and their dog) about their campsite. They have a tent setup (out of frame to the left) that is within 10 feet of the mainline. The MOW worker is presumably advising them that they are (dangerously) trespassing and that they need to leave ASAP. UP has called a special agent and, if these folks are still present when the agent shows up, they'll like be ticketed.

When the Zephyr passed this spot a few minutes earlier, the headend crew informed the dispatcher of these campers. A UP Maintenance worker overheard the conversation and drove down to inform the campers that they are trespassing and that they should break camp and leave immediately.

Possible Darwin Award nominees? These folks thought that this location, just east of the east switch of Plain, inside a cut, would be a great place to set up their tent and their campsite.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is knocking down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Plain. The siding at Plain is currently occupied by maintenance of way equipment at the west end. Not ideal as it is the only siding over 6,000 feet long between Rocky and Cliff. In the distance and slightly to the right in the frame, you can clearly see the east portal of Tunnel 4.

At the east switch of Plain, Tuesday's westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal on the journey west. Ever since moving to a thrice-weekly schedule, thanks to COVID, the Zephyr has pretty consistently been running with no baggage car and just six Superliners!

UP's eastbound MGJNY rolls east out of the east end of Plain on a clear signal. The train has quite a bit of coal up front, which is somewhat typical these days. Rather than running a lot of unit coals trains, a lot of coal is often included on the MGJNY for the trip east.

The tops of the mountains plow through some low hanging clouds as a fresh dusting of snow covers the ground and trees around Plainview. An early winter storm came through, putting down a few inches of snow on September 8 and 9! The coming forecasts shows ever flake of this snow will be gone within 48 hours as temperatures look to rise back in to the 80°Fs. Meanwhile, passengers on the Zephyr enjoy it all as they head west.
