The siding of Plain was originally named Plainview. Rio Grande shortened the names of many of its sidings to save time when talking about them. Plainview was changed to Plain. Pinecliff to Cliff. Rollinsville to Rollins. Plainview's name is very well deserved as you can see out and over the plains of Colorado.

At the east end of Plain, the westbound Zephyr is overtaking an empty UP oil train, sitting in the siding. The oil train fit in the siding by less than one car. If there had been one more tank car on the train, it would not have fit! You can see how close the end DPU is to the signal at the east end.

A transition sleeper, two regular sleepers, a diner, a sightseer lounge, and three baggage cars (the middle of which is a baggage/coach car) make up the morning westbound Zephyr as it heads down the main at Plain. This is the first time in well over a year that I've seen eight Superliners on the Zephyr. Hope it becomes a regular thing!

At the east end of Plain, UP's thrice weekly manifest from Grand Junction to North Yard is coming out of the siding and onto the main track. It'll continue down to Rocky and meet a westbound coal empty.

The westbound Zephyr has quite the colorful consist this morning, with AMTK 160 in the Phase 3 variant often known as the "Pepsi Can" scheme and AMTK 174 in Phase 7 leading the train at Plain.

The California Zephyr is combined with the equipment from the Winter Park Express on the main at Plain. The combined trainsets are reminiscent of 40 years ago in the 1980s when the California Zephyr was combined with the Pioneer and Desert Wind between Chicago and Salt Lake City. Would be great if passenger levels allowed for train lengths like this on a regular basis in 2024!

An eastbound unit oil train passes through the east OS of Plain on the main track, right at MP 24. Off in the distance, you can clearly see the Valmont powerplant. The powerplant was fueled by coal when it was in operation. However, Xcel Energy shut the power plant down in 2017.

A year from now, if the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) runs in 2025, there will very likely be houses in the background in this shot. For the first run in 2024, however, there is only asphalt and a few construction vehicles behind the westbound Ski Train on the main at Plain.

The westbound Zephyr diverges through the switch at East Plain and in to the siding, meeting an eastbound UP coal train that is holding the main. The conductor for that coal load is on the ground, ready to give a "roll by" to the Zephyr.

The westbound Zephyr appears to be headed directly toward an eastbound UP coal load. However, the Zephyr is actually lined in to the siding here for the meet. If you look closely at the signal, you can see it shows a Diverging Approach (red over yellow).

After meeting the westbound Zephyr at Crescent, UP's MGJNY got a clear (green) signal to continue east toward North Yard in Denver. The lead unit has UP's newest paint scheme, which (sadly) no longer includes the famed UP wings.
