UP has been doing quite a bit of work throughout the Tunnel District lately. Evidence of this work is very apparent at Plain. Equipment is on the house track, there is a lot of panel track, and other ties and rail are in the area. Several hyrailers are also showing up, getting ready for a days work as the westbound Zephyr rolls by on the main.

The westbound Zephyr, running about 40 minutes behind schedule, emerges from an early morning layer of fog that has totally enveloped the lower elevations in the Denver Metro area. By the time to train reaches Rainbow Cut, it will be entirely above the mist.

A pair of elephant-style GEs brings up the tail end of this eastbound loaded oil train on the main at Plain. The plains to the east are entirely obscured in a low fog layer this morning.

UP has quite a few pieces of equipment as well as dozens of sections of "panel track" laying alongside the house track at Plain. Meanwhile, the westbound Rocky Mountaineer rolls by on the main.

An empty unit oil train is stopped short of the grade crossing at Plain, waiting for maintenance to clear up. Indeed, one of the hyrailers the train is waiting for is in the process of setting off of the main. In the distance, a westbound BNSF coal load pulls west on the main at Eisele (Clay).

In the early 2000s, when coal trains were "a dime a dozen" on the Moffat, it was quite common to find a westbound coal empty stopped short of the grade crossing at Plain. The tail end of the hoppers would hang out the east end of Tunnel 1. That does not happen often these days. However, on this afternoon, a westbound empty oil train is stopped short of the grade crossing. Indeed, its tail end is out the east end of Tunnel 1.

With school back in session, a lot of vacations completed, and summer coming to a close, it appears Amtrak has reduced the Zephyr from seven Superliners to six Superliners. It is pretty common for one car to be removed from the train during the winter season, ostensibly due to a decrease in demand.

Just west of the grade crossing at Plain, the Zephyr heads west, attempting to make up a bit of time. The train departed Denver Union Station three hours late after departing Chicago nearly three hours late the day before.

BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver manifest has been holding off the grade crossing so as to avoid blocking local traffic while waiting for the Zephyr to show up. Now that the Zephyr is here, the manifest will start rolling toward the east switch at Plain.

Despite how it might appear, this is actually not a meet between a westbound oil train and an eastbound BNSF manifest. Both of these trains are actually eastbound. The oil train has slow-rolled on the main at Plain, allowing the BNSF manifest to catch up to it on the siding.

After meeting a BNSF Provo-Denver at Eisele (Clay), this long, empty UP oil train is heading west on the main at Plain. The train is likely headed for the transload facility at Wash, UT, just east of Price. From there, it will return east over the Moffat and east on the plains to its final destination.

The westbound Zephyr glides west on the main at Plain, approaching the grade crossing. If you look in the distance, you can see a tunnel portal. That is the east portal of Tunnel 4, which the Zephyr will be passing through in just a few minutes.
