Just west of the grade crossing at Plain, the Zephyr heads west, attempting to make up a bit of time. The train departed Denver Union Station three hours late after departing Chicago nearly three hours late the day before.

BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver manifest has been holding off the grade crossing so as to avoid blocking local traffic while waiting for the Zephyr to show up. Now that the Zephyr is here, the manifest will start rolling toward the east switch at Plain.

Despite how it might appear, this is actually not a meet between a westbound oil train and an eastbound BNSF manifest. Both of these trains are actually eastbound. The oil train has slow-rolled on the main at Plain, allowing the BNSF manifest to catch up to it on the siding.

After meeting a BNSF Provo-Denver at Eisele (Clay), this long, empty UP oil train is heading west on the main at Plain. The train is likely headed for the transload facility at Wash, UT, just east of Price. From there, it will return east over the Moffat and east on the plains to its final destination.

The westbound Zephyr glides west on the main at Plain, approaching the grade crossing. If you look in the distance, you can see a tunnel portal. That is the east portal of Tunnel 4, which the Zephyr will be passing through in just a few minutes.

A BNSF coal load is passing by a lot of MOW at Plain. Several track panels, sometimes referred to as "snap track" are laid out both on the house track and alongside it. The coal load met the Zephyr here at Plain, and has a clear signal coming out the east end of the siding. So it will not need to stop. In the distance, you can see the two end DPUs coming out of Tunnel 2.

The Zephyr has changed a lot over the last few decades. It used to be quite a bit longer, not only in terms of Superliners, but for many years, Amtrak hauled some freight in boxcars and trailers at the back of the train. However, that is no longer the case as Amtrak got out of the freight business entirely and now a passenger can stand at the back of the train and look right out the window and gaze upon the tracks.

Looking west through the siding at Plain from above the westbound Zephyr. There is currently a 15 MPH slow orders in the siding at Plain, so the Zephyr is creeping along toward the west switch. Once there, the train will wait for a few minutes until BNSF's Provo-Denver arrives. The manifest is currently out of Crescent, a few miles to the west.

There isn't a cloud in site on the first morning of July as the Zephyr enters the siding at Plain. A "Big Game" unit is number two in the lineup today. The train will be meeting an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver that is out of Crescent.
