I love this telephoto shot at Crescent, clearly showing the jointed rail on the siding and the welded rail on the main. If you are new to trains, jointed rail (sometimes referred to as "stick track") consists of relatively short sections of rail that are attached at either end to form a joint. Welded rail (which most mainline is these days) consists of rail that has been welded together in 1/4 mile long stretches. It still has joints at the ends of the 1/4 lengths of track, but the joints are, obviously, less common. The Winter Park Express "Ski Train" is making its way west on the main. The brightly colored bag covering the coupler will keep snow out of the coupler, making it much easier for the crew to run around the train at Fraser.

The Winter Park Express comes around the curve east of the Grade Crossing at Crescent, kicking up some exhaust as it makes it way west.

On a pleasant January morning, AMTK 193 and AMTK 156 are in charge of the second run of the Winter Park Express as it heads west at Crescent. I've wanted to try this angle for awhile and, other than a couple of annoying power lines that splice through the scene, it isn't all too bad.

The westbound Zephyr, running right on time, glides west down the main at Crescent. It is a slow day on the Moffat and the first eastbound the Zephyr will meet will be its counterpart, the eastbound Zephyr, at Dotsero. Right now, the Zephyr is only running between Chicago and Salt Lake City. This is due to major flooding in Nevada that has caused a lot of washouts for Union Pacific. Until the tracks are repaired, the Zephyr has been truncated to help keep it running on time.

I enjoy the leafless Aspen in the background of this shot, and the clearly jointed rail of the siding of Crescent in the foreground. Crescent, coming in at "only" 5,550 feet long, which is not long enough for most of the coal train on the Moffat. But even manifest don't typically meet at Crescent due to the grade crossing located two thirds of the way through the siding (from the east end).

The westbound California Zephyr crosses the grade crossing at Crescent on its journey west. At the time of this shot, the Winter Park Express Ski Train was unloading its passenger at Winter Park. In addition, a westbound coal empty sat on the siding at Rollins, waiting for the Zephyr to pass it.

Unfortunately, in the time it took for the train to pass by on the main at Crescent, the clouds moved back in and obscured the sun. Regardless, here is a shot of the sole DPU on the tail end of a westbound BNSF manifest passing by some Aspen trees just west of the grade crossing.

Crescent can be a tricky place to shoot, depending on the time of day. It can also depend on the time of year. The lighting is actually pretty good in the afternoon and evening in the summer months as the sun is far enough to the north to get the nose of the lead unit.

The sun found a hole in the clouds to punch through just in time for the arrival of this BNSF manifest at Crescent. The crew has been on duty for less than two hours at this point and, with the decreased traffic on the Moffat, should have no problem getting to Grand Junction before dying at 1:45am.

The tail end of an EMD special moves west, away from the camera, at Crescent. The train is headed for the wye at Tabernash where it will tie down and spend the night. In the next few days after this picture was taken, UP and EMD would test the SD70ACe-T4 at high altitude and through the Moffat Tunnel.

My last view of the SD70ACe-T4 prototypes as the train continues west. Crescent was as far west as I would be able to make it as I had to return to town in order to pick the kids up from school. The paint scheme on these units looks particularly good among the snow and pine trees, don't you think?

I was actually rather glad that the sky was overcast for this shot at Crescent. The sun was on the opposite side of the tracks, but the trees on that side make it difficult to get much of a shot other than close to head on. Here, an SD70AH leads an EMD special that is headed for Tabernash.

This ended up being one of my favorite shots of the day for this EMD special. The train includes two of EMDs SD70ACe-T4 prototypes and test car #820. The train is headed for Tabernash where it will undergo high altitude and tunnel testing later in the week. With the first eastbound being Amtrak over near Gore Canyon, the train had clear signals up to the tunnel.

I got myself in to a predicament at Crescent on this Sunday afternoon. I knew the BNSF manifest (in the foreground) would be taking the siding. However, I thought that it would be short enough to fit east of the grade crossing. Unfortunately, that turned out not to be the case. The train came to a stop on the grade crossing, preventing me from getting to the other side of the tracks to shoot and westbound. Since I couldn't get over there, I decided to make lemonade out of lemons and get a blurred shot of the westbound between tank cars at the grade crossing.
