Moffat Tunnel (UP) Winter Park Express
The Winter Park Express kicks off its second weekend on January 14th! Here, the train is between Leyden and Rocky near the east end of Barbara's Gulch. The Phase I P42DC (AMTK 156) that was used the previous week was removed and sent west on the California Zephyr.

While there was no snow on the ground down in Denver, that is very much not the case here at 8,500 feet above sea level! The morning Ski Train glides through Rollinsville and the winter wonderland that it currently is.

It is tricky finding good light for the Ski Train (and the Zephyr) as both run west in the morning and east in the evening. In other words, the sun is always behind the train. With F40PH 406 on the tail end of the Winter Park Express, however, this going away shot at Rollins in morning sunlight looks pretty darn nice.

A westbound coal empty knocks down an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the west end of Cliff. This empty took the siding at Rocky where the Winter Park Express Ski Train overtook it. It will next take the siding at Rollins to allow the California Zephyr to pass it as well.

A single AC4400CW brings up the tail end of this North Fork Branch-bound coal empty. The train has six units (configured 5x(0)x1). It is a chilly morning along a frozen-over South Boulder Creek!

The westbound California Zephyr crosses the grade crossing at Crescent on its journey west. At the time of this shot, the Winter Park Express Ski Train was unloading its passenger at Winter Park. In addition, a westbound coal empty sat on the siding at Rollins, waiting for the Zephyr to pass it.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
With the construction of the RTD A-Line (Commuter Rail) from Union Station to DIA, several new pedestrian overpasses have been constructed. One such overpass crosses UP's 36th Street Yard in Denver. This offers a new perspective on the yard that was not previously possible! Here, we can see units used on locals and for switching in the yard (to the right), and some units on the "ready track" to the left. Those units (to the left) will be used on the MDVSI (Manifest, Denver, CO to Salina, KS).

Yard Shots Union Pacific
The ever-changing landscape of Denver in the 21st Century! The buildings and commuter rail increase as the freight rails, at best, stay unchanged if not decrease. A gaggle of units sit near the 36th Street yard office (seen to the right) which will soon move to the northeast.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of a northbound coal empty. The train is crossing 88th Avenue on the Front Range Sub. If you look in the distance just to the left of the train, you can see a couple of apartment buildings. I actually lived in those building for about 18 months when I was in college!
