You may recall that back on February 17, 2018, UP pulled a GP30, a crane, and a caboose out of the storage yard at Burnham. The crane was destined for the (future) Moffat Museum in Granby. On this Saturday, the move was finally made! An SD70M and an SD70ACe take the crane west at Leyden.

Two UP units take a classic Denver and Salt Lake (steam-powered) crane west from Denver to Granby. The train kept its speed at 20 MPH (or so) on the trip west. Several guys on the back of the crane ensure the move was safe.

This old crane has spent a lot of time on Moffat in its history. It was originally built to serve the Denver and Salt Lake railroad nearly 100 years ago. It is now being transported to Granby where it will be part of the (future) Moffat Museum.

Must have been quite a ride for the UP crew members on the back of the flat car on the crane. Was pretty neat catching this move...more than likely the last time the crane will roll over these rails.

There was quite a photo line setup for this rare westbound move at Blue Mountain Road! There must have been no less than 15 photographers set up with cameras along the road. The train is headed for Granby to drop off the crane.

This old D&SL crane rolls west on the main at Blue Mountain Road after spending a few decades in storage at Burnham. Note the "big hook", which is tied down with a yellow strap to the flat car, keeping it in place.

Up had four crew members riding along on the back of this flat car to monitor the move of this classic crane west on the Moffat. Among the crew members is Ed Dickens, who is in charge of the steam and heritage fleet for UP.

A pair of SD70s (an SD70M and an SD70ACe) lead a D&SL crane west on the Moffat mainline on the climb up to Tunnel 1. It would be interesting to know of all the things this crane has seen over the course of its life!
