A northbound train sits on the siding facing a red signal at the north end of Platteville. After meeting one southbound, the train is now waiting for a second southbound. The train they are waiting on is currently switching at Gilcrest a few miles to the north.

With only a hundred or so SD70ACe-T4s on UP's roster, it was a bit unusual to catch two of them on this northbound train sitting in the siding at Platteville. Unlike the SD70ACe, the T4 (Tier-4 which meet Tier-4 emissions standards), has a larger and boxier long hood.

Tier-4 locomotives have not been particularly popular since their (required) introduction. UP has indulged EMD with the purchase of around 100 SD70ACe-T4s, but that's about it. One such example, UP 3012, is seen here on a northbound train in the siding at Platteville.

Rumor has it that UP is looking to modify its paint scheme, specifically removing the American flag from the long hood. Seems like UP 7295 might be a candidate for a scheme Union Pacific intends to use moving forward.

UP 8074, the lead unit on a southbound auto rack train in the siding at Platteville on the Greeley Sub. One thing that very much caught my attention was the seemingly freshly painted front end of UP 8074, including the stairs and pilot up to the anti-climber. Perhaps repairs from a collision?

On a beautiful March evening in Platteville, a southbound auto rack train sits in the siding as a few cars pass by on US-85. The day has seen mostly sunny skies and quite a bit of wind.

A southbound UP manifest sits patiently waiting in the siding at Platteville. The train has had to wait for two northbounds, and is now waiting for a rerouted California Zephyr to overtake it south. The Zephyr is out of La Salle and will come flying by on the main soon. The scene has a been of a pink tint to it as the sun tries to shine through smoke from a wildfire to the west.

East meets west...actually, make that north meets south as we are in Platteville, CO for a very rare meeting location of the two California Zephyrs. The Grizzly Creek wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has the tracks closed, so the Zephyrs are detouring through Wyoming.

The westbound Zephyr has come to a stop in the siding at Platteville while waiting for the eastbound Zephyr. Amtrak has run regularly on the Greeley Sub at varying points in history. The San Francisco Zephyr ran here from 1971 to 1983 until Rio Grande stopped the Rio Grande Zephyr. Then, the California Zephyr started again and Amtrak left the (now) Greeley Sub. However, it returned in 1991 when Amtrak's Pioneer terminus was changed from Salt Lake City to Denver. Another change came two years later in 1993 when the Pioneer was reduced to a thrice-weekly train. Then, in 1997, the Pioneer was eliminated entirely, ending regular Amtrak train on the Greeley Sub.

The westbound California Zephyr is currently northbound in the siding at Platteville, passing by some Swift trailers parked nearby. A wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has closed the tracks and, consequently, the Zephyr is being rerouted through Wyoming between Denver and Salt Lake City. The train will meet its counterpart here.

A BNSF (reroute) molten sulfur train sits in the siding at Platteville. It was rerouted because floods from a week earlier took out the Front Range Sub, which was still under repair at this point. The BNSF train is awaiting the arrival of the California Zephyr, rerouting through Wyoming as the Moffat was also damaged in the flooding.

There is a little bit of clutter in the foreground, but I figured it was worth it to get this rare shot of a BNSF (reroute) train sitting in the siding at Platteville. The train is awaiting the arrival of Amtrak so it can continue north and move back to its own property in Cheyenne.

One of the La Salle locals holds the main at Platteville with a trio of GP40-2s. The last of the GP40-2s is former DRGW GP40-2 #3126! The train is waiting on a northbound hyrailer that will clear up in the siding.

Right at milepost 35, UP's track test car EC-4 is headed south through the siding at Platteville. The car previously came north and was on the mainline, so it is now checking out the siding.

UP's track test car, EC-4, has been to down before and is usually under its own power. However, a broken transmission on the EC-4 meant that it got a free ride by a great looking ES44AC.
