UP's MNPDV has tied down half the train on the main (in the background) so that 70 covered hoppers can be dropped off here at Eaton, CO. There is a bit of color on the train today with KCS 4121 on the point.

With the recent merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern, the amazing "Retro-Belle" paint scheme will be disappearing in the coming years. KCS units don't show up that often in Colorado as is, so it's great to get shots whenever possible.

UP has spun up a pretty serious rebuild program for older (mid-90s to mid-2000s) GE. UP 7154 is one such example, which is now designated as an C44ACM.

Take a look at UP's newest paint scheme! After two decades of the American flag on the long hood and wings on the nose, UP has changed their official paint scheme. The flag has been moved to either side of the short hood and the long nose just reads "Union Pacific" again. The wings have also, sadly, been removed from the nose.

UP 6964 was originally built as a 6000 HP AC6000CW. It has been rebuilt (and repainted) as a standard 4400 HP C44ACM.

There is a relatively new industry in Eaton, CO that needs covered hoppers...a lot of covered hoppers. Not sure if these are sand hoppers for fracking. But UP's MNPDV is dropping off 70 such covered hoppers this morning.

KCS 4121, leading the MNPDV, is dropping off 70 covered hoppers off the main here at Eaton. The rest of the train, consisting of double stacks and auto racks is sitting on the main to the left.

UP's MNPDV-17 is putting its train together at Eaton to prepare for the continued trip south. In the foreground is a irrigation pivot, used to water one of the many fields found on the farmland of eastern Colorado.

Throughout much of the year, the South Platte River seems to be down at almost a trickle. However, after a winter with a lot of snow fall and a ton of rain this spring, the South Platte have flowed a bit over its banks! A southbound UP manifest has a Kansas City Southern "Retro-Belle" SD70ACe on the point as the train crosses the river. Although this is a manifest in UP's system, there are several dozen double stacks at the front of the train.

UP's MNPDV is moving south on the Greeley Sub at Gilcrest along US-85. Near-record rainfall in May and June has resulted in some flooded fields along the tracks, creating an interesting dynamic.

A lake that normally would not exist has popped up along the tracks as a field has flooded in the recent high volumes of rain. Cows in the distance seem to be enjoying the plentiful grass mixed with water as a southbound UP manifest, with a KCS lead, roll by south.

Tier-4 locomotives have not been particularly popular since their (required) introduction. UP has indulged EMD with the purchase of around 100 SD70ACe-T4s, but that's about it. One such example, UP 3012, is seen here on a northbound train in the siding at Platteville.

With only a hundred or so SD70ACe-T4s on UP's roster, it was a bit unusual to catch two of them on this northbound train sitting in the siding at Platteville. Unlike the SD70ACe, the T4 (Tier-4 which meet Tier-4 emissions standards), has a larger and boxier long hood.

A northbound train sits on the siding facing a red signal at the north end of Platteville. After meeting one southbound, the train is now waiting for a second southbound. The train they are waiting on is currently switching at Gilcrest a few miles to the north.
