East Cliff is a bit of an interesting OS, as it is about 1,000 feet long. The curve of the track prevents the east switch from being visible from the grade crossing, so the signals at the east end are quite a ways west of the switch itself. The OS at the east switch of cliff is quite long, as there is a curve that obstructs the view. The eastbound signals are placed so they are visible from the grade crossing around the bend. Only later on did I learn that the Zephyr had in fact been annulled, so the manifest has clear signals the rest of the way down the hill. With only five units (three on the point and two on the rear), this crazy heavy train is making an average speed of about 10 MPH up the Moffat. You may have noticed that one ditch light is brighter than the other...this is because NS (and CSX) have chosen to have oscillating ditch lights when the horn is being blown. In the distance, a car descends down CO-72 toward Pinecliff. The road takes a shortcut over a lot of the mountainous terrain here, whereas the tracks stick close to South Boulder Creek. If you happen to have a long lens with you, you can get some pretty dramatic shots, particularly of westbounds coming around the curve and in to view from the east.
