The Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset is a pretty nice looking trainset! This is a brand new trainset, built by Siemens, that is set to enter into service in 2026. The trainset is currently being transported to the Transportation Technology Center (TTC), a railroad testing facility near Pueblo, CO. The train heads east on the main at Tolland in this shot.

After the California Zephyr ran around the Rocky Mountaineer at Rollins, the Mountaineer is now headed west on the main at Tolland. The Zephyr is still in the Moffat Tunnel, so the Mountaineer will have to stop for a few minutes at East Portal.

The deciduous trees here at Tolland are some late-bloomers. I was up here about a month earlier in May, and all these trees were still devoid of leaves. However, thanks to a relatively wet spring, they are now as green as you can get, filled with leaves as this westbound coal empty passes by at the west end of Tolland. Note the classic yellow and green Tolland school house on the left side of the frame.

RMRX 8021 and RMRX 8020 lead the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer through a sea of deciduous trees, lining both sides of the tracks near the west switch of Tolland. Come September, these trees should be burning in beautify fall gold.

It is lightly sprinkling at Tolland as the Zephyr hustles along east at track speed, trying to make up a bit of time. Two private passenger cars are bringing up the end of the Zephyr today.

Despite the fact that we are about three weeks away from the start of summer the aspen trees here at Tolland still bare of their leaves. The eastbound Zephyr is running around 90 minutes late as it approaches the grade crossing at Tolland.

AMTK 146 leads the Winter Park Express across the grade crossing at Tolland. The train was slightly delayed in departing Winter Park as it had to wait for the Moffat Tunnel to vent after a 25 minute late Zephyr went into the tunnel first.

The evening Winter Park Express is running just a couple of minute late as it approaches the grade crossing at Tolland. The sun has set at this point and the light is fading, but the scene is a nice and tranquil one.

In the middle of winter, the Zephyr arrives in Denver well after sunset, even when it is running right on time. However, you can catch it in a little bit of direct sunlight close to the Moffat Tunnel. Here, the train is passing by the handful of houses found in Tolland. Most are summer houses, currently boarded up and empty. However, one single house, which the Zephyr is about to pass, is home to a Gilpin County Sheriff.

This westbound Denver-Provo manifest is (and has been) stuck in the siding at Tolland for quite awhile. The train met an eastbound BNSF oil train, waited for the Moffat Tunnel to vent, then waited for the Winter Park Express (that is what it is waiting for now). After that, the tunnel had to vent again, before the train departed west to meet the Zephyr at Winter Park.

This is a wonderful time of year to be riding on the Zephyr to your destination. Reports are that I-70, the main highway through the Rocky Mountains west of Denver, is at a stand still with congested traffic. Passengers on the Zephyr, however, get to bypass that headache and enjoy the frigid view out the train here at Tolland.

Wind gusts are reaching 40 MPH in the valley here at Tolland this morning. The wind speeds are quite evident from the snow that is being kicked up along the tracks as the westbound Zephyr approaches, running right on time.
