The Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset is a pretty nice looking trainset! This is a brand new trainset, built by Siemens, that is set to enter into service in 2026. The trainset is currently being transported to the Transportation Technology Center (TTC), a railroad testing facility near Pueblo, CO. The train heads east on the main at Tolland in this shot.

The last bit of direct sunlight that I would get for the day is shining on an Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset, being transported as part of a special Amtrak train (train number 964), by the location of the now-daylighted Tunnel 28.

This is a closeup look at AMTK 79501, the final car on the new Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset. This is a Cab/Coach car that will work as part of a push-pull operation. It has 88 seats in the car. This is a new trainset built by Siemens in California.

I like the image of Mount Rainier that is part of the paint scheme on this Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset. The individual cars on this trainset are semi-permanent components of the trainset as a whole. The can be separated, such as for repairs, but they are generally designed to remain together.

Here is a close look at AMTK 70001, a Siemens ALC-42E. It sports the Amtrak Cascades paint scheme, which includes a "Washington State Department of Transportation" marking on it, as Amtrak Cascades is a joint venture (state-sponsored) version of Amtrak between Amtrak and the state of Washington.

This Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset is currently stopped on the main at Rocky, waiting for a westbound UP manifest. The AIRO trainsets will, in general, consist of a ALC-42E locomotive, a baggage/coach car, cafe car, business class car, a few standard coaches, and a cab/coach car.

An eastbound Amtrak special, carrying an Amtrak Cascades AIRO trainset, sits stopped at a red signal on the main at Rocky. The train is waiting on a westbound UP MNYGJ, which is going quite a bit slower than the dispatcher would have liked. The dispatcher was hoping the manifest would have been in the siding waiting for the special by the time the special arrived.

The sun has just dipped behind the mountains to the west as a westbound UP manifest, the thrice weekly MNYGJ, rolls west in the siding. The manifest was entirely composed of covered hoppers, and had an interesting configuration with three units on the point, and a single SD70ACe as a mid-train swing helper!

One final look at the eastbound Amtrak special as it makes its way through Barbara's Gulch eastbound. Was pretty cool to see the Amtrak Cascades trainset here in Colorado. The trainset is headed to Pueblo for testing at the TTC. After testing is complete, when the trainset is ready to head to the Pacific Northwest, it might just head back west on the Moffat...
