At the west switch of Irondale, this BNSF manifest (with some power-shared UP power) has come to a stop. Here it will wait for at least one eastbound coal load.

After picking up a train of empty coal hoppers at Xcel's Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver, the crew on this "Public Service" train is headed for North Yard. Upon arriving, swing power will be added as well as power to the rear end and it will depart west for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

UP 7709 is pulling an empty train of coal hoppers out of Xcel Energy's Cherokee power plant. This is a scene that, supposedly, will not be reproducible by the end of 2014. Xcel is in the process of converting the Cherokee plant to run exclusively on natural gas. Once complete, UP will be losing a major coal customer in Denver!

The Belt Industrial Lead (or simply "Belt Line") was used by Rio Grande to interchange with Rock Island and Union Pacific. Now, it is used by Union Pacific for all coal loads headed north or east out of Denver. Or, as in this case, coal empties coming in from the north or east. Manifests use the Belt Line as well, but coal trains are certainly more common. This coal empty is approaching Broadway and the line in to North Yard. The highway in the background is I-25.

An Xcel Energy coal empty comes across the Belt Line headed for North Yard under somewhat glorious, partly cloudy skies. With Xcel Energy making a push to move from coal to natural gas, the days for these hoppers may well be numbered.

Destruction and construction! The concrete tie plant (owned by Rocla) that used to be located just east of BNSF's Rennicks Yard has been moved to Pueblo, CO. The reason? RTD and the FasTracks project! The old building for the tie plant has largely been torn down and can be see way off in the distance. Meanwhile, a lot of construction has already been completed on the new Light Rail flyover.

This GP38-2 has certainly seen better days. However, it is a testament to the quality of EMD power that this nearly 35-year-old unit is still on the rails. Sure hope EMD can find some new life under Caterpillar.

UP is in the process of renumbering their 309 SD9043MACs. The units have spent their entire lives in the 8000-8308 number range. Now, in order to make room for new power, the units are being moved to a number range that, for several decades, was held by UP's SD40-2 force. It looks quite odd to see this unit with such a lower number after 17 years.

The SD70ACe is, of course, the latest and greatest power offered by EMD. This particular units joined UP's roster in 2008 as part of an order of 50 such units. They are not super common in Denver as there is such a focus on coal in Denver and SD70ACes, at this point, are seldom - if ever - used as coal power.

Oh the wye near Kalamath Street, hostlers are turning around a stretch of six units. A very dirty UP 6668 is the lead unit.

The big yellow patch, just like the one seen here, has now been applied to all but 11 of the 273 AC4400CWs that Espee had on their roster. The scarlet and gray is fading and not looking too well. Unfortunately, Espee is getting very close to being nothing more than a museum railroad.

The ES44AC (or, as UP designated it, the C45ACCTE) is the latest and greatest offered by General Electric. Granted this particular unit, spotted in North Yard, could stand a bath at this point!
