There is barely a cloud in the sky on a July day that saw triple digit heat in the Denver Metro area. The Colorado Springs Utility coal train sits on Yard Track 1, awaiting for a crew. Once it gets a crew, it will depart on the Belt Industrial Lead and head to the Greeley Sub and north to the Powder River Basin.

The mercury hits triple digits (101°F) on a very hot summer day as a North Yard remote job switches cars in the storage yard. In the background, a train carrying wind nacelles enters in to the yard from the Belt Industrial lead, crossing BNSF's North Main and UP's own Moffat Tunnel Sub Main.

The area around has changed a lot over the decades, but by-and-large North Yard has remained the same for those same decades. This, along with Roper in Salt Lake, was Rio Grande’s main classification yard. Under SP, the yard was packed full still as many trains ran on the Moffat from the Pacific Northwest to Texas. Under UP, however...particularly in the last few years...traffic has dropped off quite a bit.

UP 1996 was painted in honor of Southern Pacific, which became part of Union Pacific in September 1996. About four years after that merger, UP 4395 was delivered as part of 1,000 unit order of SD70Ms. Crazy to think it has been nearly 24 years since UP and SP merged.

UP 1996, one of UP’s six heritage units, sits on one of the ready tracks in North Yard on a June afternoon. It is, perhaps, somewhat ironic that exactly 14 years ago that UP 1989, the Rio Grande Heritage Unit, sat a few hundred yards from this location under a tarp, waiting to be unveiled! UP 1996 is, of course, Southern Pacific’s heritage unit.

UP 1996 sits among a few other units in North Yard. It came in on the MNPNY yesterday and, after being fueled, is now waiting for its next assignment.

Here is a real sign of the downturn in the economy thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic! North Yard has far more yard tracks open than it has filled right now. One of the tracks (the one that is mostly tank cars with some white covered hoppers at the end) is the end of a train. The MNYNP is about to depart for North Platte, NE and Bailey Yard.

A pair of SD40-2s, saddled with switching duties, come to a stop on the "third rail" in North Yard near the yard office. A GP48-2 and another SD40-2 sit on an engine track a few tracks over. The relative lack of cars in the parking lot at the yard office is an indication of the slim economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overnight, UP 1989 led a coal empty down the Greeley Sub. The train is headed for the Savage load out in Utah. Alas, the train needed an air brake inspection and therefore had to pull in to North Yard rather than stay on a bypass track. As a result, the train departed with UP 1989 trailing, rather than leading.

With Burnham now gone for 2 1/2 years, North Yard has taken on minor repairs to engines. Anything that cannot be repaired in Denver is typically sent to either North Platte, NE or Little Rock, AR. Here, a string of four units sits on one of the repair tracks at North Yard. Closest to the camera is an NRE 3GS21B; a low emissions unit that spends most of its time in either Texas or California.

This is something of an interesting looking unit...one that we don't see in Denver too often. This is a 3GS21B, often referred to as a Genset. It was built by National Railway Equipment and uses three low emission Cummins engines. UP has 59 on the roster, and they are primarily used in Texas and California, where emissions standards are more stringent.

For the first time since July of 2014, I got a few shots of the Missouri Pacific heritage unit as it made an overnight stop in Denver. The unit is number 1982 as that was the year that Union Pacific took over Missouri Pacific.

UP 1982 is lashed up with three other UP units, sitting on the ready track in North Yard, will soon be moved over to 36th Street Yard to lead a train north on the Greeley Sub. In the meantime, the screaming eagle looks mighty find underneath mostly clear skies!

Sitting on the ready track in North Yard, the Missouri Pacific heritage unit is ready to be transferred over to 36th Street so it can lead a train north to Cheyenne overnight.
