UP 4014 rolls past a crowd of folks gathered near the North Yard office, preparing to departing north for Cheyenne. I love the Colorado flag the steam crew has mounted on the engine.

After spending two nights in Denver, UP 4014 is slowly pulling out from one of the tracks near the North Yard office. Imagine a time when a scene like this at North Yard was a daily occurrence! Granted, Rio Grande never had any Big Boys, but the idea of steam moving around North Yard is a fun one.

Steaming up! UP's 83-year-old Big Boy steam engine is coming to life. Shortly, it will pull out of this track near the North Yard yard office and proceed north to Cheyenne.

UP's MGJNY has arrived in North Yard. After dropping off some cars in Track 5, the remainder of the train is being backed into Track 4. After clearing in Track 4, the power will wait for UP 4014, sitting back near the yard office, to back in to Track 9. Then, the power here will go to the fuel tracks.

In the late 90s, Union Pacific really wanted units with more horsepower. EMD and GE both obliged with their own attempts at a 6000 HP unit. GEs was designed an AC6000CW. UP 6894 was delivered to UP as UP 7006, one of the original GE AC6000CW. The 6000 HP units were plagued with issues, and the attempts were eventually ditched. Today, UP 6894 has been rebuilt (internally) with a 4400 HP prime mover and is designated as a C44ACM.

Sitting on the ready tracks at North Yard, UP 1943 looks pretty great in the morning light. The unit has spent a lot of time leading oil trains between Wash, UT and destination to the east. However, rumor has it that its 92-day inspection is due. Since that can no longer be conducted in Denver, the unit will likely go to North Platte, NE on the MNYNP. From there? Who can say...

With the cost and seemingly frequent mechanical issues of Tier-4 locomotives, many railroads have taken to rebuilding rather than buying new. UP is no exception, as they have been rebuilding C44-9Ws, C44AC-CTEs, and others into C44ACMs. UP 5830 is a good example, as it sports UP's newest official scheme on the ready tracks in North Yard.

A pair of SD60Ms sit on a shop track in North Yard. UP 2465 was delivered to UP in March 1992 and UP 2498 was delivered to UP in October 1992. 32 years later and both units are still on the roster. I don't recall the last time I saw an SD60M on the main, so not entirely sure where these two units came from or where they are headed.

An SD60M, with a bit of a sketchy paint scheme, sits on a shop track in North Yard. Not sure where the unit is headed from here. Storage? Sale? Rebuild? Any of the three seems like a possibility.

Of UP's six heritage units, UP 1983 is the one I had not seen the longest (eight years earlier, as of this shot). The angle and clutter in the shot isn't great, but I still wanted to get a shot while it was in Denver. It is currently sitting on the ready track in Denver, awaiting its next assignment.

While searching for UP 1943, which is supposed to be leading a westbound oil train out of Denver later in the day, I came across this old UP SD60M! It was originally delivered as UP 6337 in September 1992. What is the fate of the unit? My guess would be that it is on its way to storage, but I do not know.

There are only five AC4400CWs still on UP's roster that have not received a full UP repaint. UP 6236 is one such example, still in its original scarlet and gray, with yellow UP patches applied. Here, it sits in North Yard awaiting assignment after arriving on the MGJNY. The unit actually served on the Minturn Local (which hasn't gone as far as Minturn in decades) just a few days ago in the Colorado high country. This was originally SP 257.

I'm speculating that UP 4039 has spent some time either in either Southern California or maybe the Houston area in Texas. Those locations tend to attract a lot "taggers"; people that apply graffiti to things.

UP 1357 and UPY 625 sit idle in North Yard, not far from the yard tower. When needed, they will be used to switch cars in the yard. UP 1357 started life as DRGW 3102. Amazingly, the GP40-2 that spent so many years on the former Grande, can still be regularly found in and around Denver.

UP 1905 is an SD40N. It has been rebuilt by UP from an SD40-2, along with dozens (even hundreds) of others. The unit was originally UP 3205, delivered in May 1973.
