Take note of this scene of the Zephyr crossing 72nd Avenue in Arvada. It is a scene that is going to change substantially in the come year or two. Residents in the City of Arvada voted to approve funds to widen 72nd Avenue to four lanes and create an underpass, creating a grade separation between the road and the tracks.

A single car is stopped at the 72nd Avenue grade crossing in Arvada, just east of Leyden. This grade crossing will no longer be here in roughly two years when the City of Arvada widens 72nd Avenue to four lanes and drops the road beneath the tracks here. For now, however, an eastbound BNSF coal load crosses the road at grade, as thousands of trains before it have done.

A pair of ES44C4s bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver manfiest. The train has 80 cars today, with six units on the head end in addition to the two DPUs. The train is just a handful of miles away from its destination at the yard in Denver. It originated yesterday evening in Provo, UT.

Cars on 72nd Avenue wait for two DPUs to bring up the end of this eastbound Provo-Denver to clear the crossing so they can continue on their way. A few years from now, and these cars should not have to stop here at all anymore as 72nd Avenue will run underneath the tracks on a new grade separation. It is interesting to note that, once this grade separation is complete, there will be about 7,000 feet between Kipling Street and Simms Street. Enough room for a train to stop (if it needs to) without blocking any crossing. Something that cannot really be done today throughout most of Arvada east of Leyden.

This scene is going to change rather drastically in the next two years or so. In 2018, Arvada residents voted to widen 72nd Avenue (from two lanes to four lanes) between Kipling Street and Swadley Court. 72nd Avenue is seen here as the Provo-Denver crosses. Not only will the road be widened, but a grade separation is also part of the project. 72nd Avenue will be lowered underneath the tracks and a new bridge will be built for the Moffat. I'll try to get some aerial footage of the work as it progresses. Plans for the underpass are slated for completion in Q2 of 2021. Construction will theoretically start in Q4 of 2021 and completion of the entire project at the end of 2022.

It is not yet 10 o'clock in the morning, yet the sun is already getting high enough for shading to appear alongside the side of the Provo-Denver as the train approaches the grade crossing at 72nd Ave in Arvada.

On this cold February morning, the westbound Winter Park Express is led by AMTK 193 as the train approaches the 72nd Avenue grade crossing. After the power runs around the train in Winter Park, AMTK 156 will be in the lead for the trip back east.

The Winter Park Express just crossed over Kipling Street as it makes its way west on a very gloomy (and chilly) Sunday morning. The temperature outside is only 17°F. With the wind taken into consideration, it only feels to be about 9°F out. Still, any time is a good time for the new Ski Train.

Canadian Pacific units show up in Colorado on rare occasions. However, this is the first time I happened to see one on a UP coal train on the Moffat! It has seen better days, too. A lot of the paint is chipping and pealing. And the lower half of the unit is covered in grime.

This eastbound coal load has a rather rare (red) visitor on it as a Canadian Pacific AC4400CW lends a hand. Interestingly, as of this photo, I have fewer shots of Canadian Pacific units on my site than any other Class 1 railroad. This makes only the 7th unit CP unit I've shot.
