With the departure of Daylight Savings Time comes winter lighting - or lack there of. Its about 4:15pm as this eastbound coal load makes its way through the curves at Blue Mountain. Three mid-train swing helpers will be cut out at Denver before the train continues east on the KP.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
After loosing a piece of metal frame sticking up from the damaged grade crossing, the engineer onboard SKTX 242 takes the Ski Train across the grade crossing at "walking speed". Members of the Ski Train crew monitor the crossing from a safe distance to ensure no additional problems develop. After the entire train was clear of the crossing without incident, the crew walked back to the head-end and the train continued into town.

Two members of the Ski Train crew and the Chief Mechanic for the Ski Train check out some damage to the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. A few swings of the sledge hammer loosened the metal frame enough that it could be pushed back down by foot. The Ski Train itself waits patiently off to the left of the image.

A site that is repeated many times each year...although it was a bit different on this particular summer evening. Does the engineer look a bit lonely in the cab? The rest of the crew is down on the ground trying to jury-rig some damage to the road crossing. For the time being, the Ski Train is standing still!

Grade crossing damage causing a headache! The grade crossing at Blue Mountain had some pretty serious damage done (although how, I'm not sure). The big problem was the piece of steel sticking about three inches up into the air. Not a big problem for westbounds, but there was a concern that eastbounds could catch the metal.

I have always liked Blue Mountain, probably because it reminds me of my child hood. My dad and I spent many an afternoon at the grade crossing watching trains go by. Here, the Ski Train fills the images as it moves along at the base of the mountain, the road leading up to the homes (and many of the homes as well) are visible in the image.

Early morning sunlight glistens off the side of the Superliners of Amtrak 6, running almost exactly twelve hour late. It is about ten minutes to 6:00am as the train approaches Clay. Note the Denver Skyline just about the hill on the right side of the picture.

Not more than ten minutes after sunrise, this eastbound MPVNY wraps through the curves at Blue Mountain about twenty miles west of North Yard. The time is about 5:45am.

Passengers should be pleased about the snow as the last Thursday Ski Train of the 2006-2007 winter season heads west at Blue Mountain. The train is just about to hit the hotbox detector at milepost 22.6.

After meeting an eastbound coal load at Clay (resulting in about a ten minute delay), the westbound Ski Train is wrapping around the S-Curves at Blue Mountain and Coal Creek, preparing for the climb up to Tunnel 1 and the start of the Tunnel District.

An eastbound coal load descends past the hot box detector at milepost 22.6. The train is running on a yellow (approach) signal as it will be meeting the westbound Ski Train at Clay. You can just barely see the first (of three) swing helpers on the right side of the image in the distance.

You have the wonder if the jeep driving east on Highway 72 gives the Ski Train a second thought as it crosses over the highway at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

The Hot Box Detector ("HBD") at MP 22.6 just gave the Ski Train a clean bill of health on its journey west. No dragging equipment was detected and the temperature of all 80 axles was nominal. The train is climbing toward Tunnel 1, nearing the halfway point of its journey west.

The Ski Train rounds the curve coming out of Clay and approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. While UP 1989 will be missed on the point of the Ski Train, it is nice to have the custom painted F40's back in charge again!
