Its about 4:15pm as this eastbound coal load makes its way through the curves at Blue Mountain. Three mid-train swing helpers will be cut out at Denver before the train continues east on the KP. Members of the Ski Train crew monitor the crossing from a safe distance to ensure no additional problems develop. After the entire train was clear of the crossing without incident, the crew walked back to the head-end and the train continued into town. A few swings of the sledge hammer loosened the metal frame enough that it could be pushed back down by foot. The Ski Train itself waits patiently off to the left of the image. Does the engineer look a bit lonely in the cab? The rest of the crew is down on the ground trying to jury-rig some damage to the road crossing. For the time being, the Ski Train is standing still! The grade crossing at Blue Mountain had some pretty serious damage done (although how, I'm not sure). The big problem was the piece of steel sticking about three inches up into the air. My dad and I spent many an afternoon at the grade crossing watching trains go by. Here, the Ski Train fills the images as it moves along at the base of the mountain, the road leading up to the homes (and many of the homes as well) are visible in the image. No dragging equipment was detected and the temperature of all 80 axles was nominal. The train is climbing toward Tunnel 1, nearing the halfway point of its journey west. While UP 1989 will be missed on the point of the Ski Train, it is nice to have the custom painted F40's back in charge again!
