After meeting the westbound MNYRO at Tolland, this eastbound coal train is still on the roll as it continues on the main. With the compression of a 300mm lens, you can clear see the mid-train swing helpers coming up toward the end of the manifest at Tolland.

The conductor on the MNYRO gives a friendly wave as the manifest charges west out of Rollins. The train had stopped for about 20 minutes on the main to wait for maintenance to clear up ahead of them.

On a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, a coal train holds in the siding at Leyden to wait for the westbound "West Local". The local only has a pair of GP40-2's for power and a string of heavy covered hoppers, so the geeps are working very hard.

A single C44AC-CTE brings up the tail end of this coal empty which is headed for the North Fork branch out of Grand Junction. The colorful (fully flagged and winged) unit is the perfect way to wrap up a nice bit of shooting on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.

Approaching the west switch at Leyden, this coal empty is making track speed at 35 MPH with its three units (the third being on the rear). This shot is relatively close to the location of the old west end of Leyden. It used to be a fairly short siding (under 5,000 feet) with the west end lining up with the cottonwood trees to the right. It was extended to its current 7,100 feet by Rio Grande in the early 1980's.

Got maintenance? A Loram ballast machine is doing some ballast work along the outside of the rails on the siding at Leyden. The Loram crew had hoped to be working on the main east of Leyden, but, as you can see, the dispatcher had trains to run! So, the crew took advantage off the non-mainline time and did some work on the siding. The crew was explicitly told not to work on the south side of the tracks (the inside of the curve) due to the trains coming through on the main. Always, safety first!

Interesting to note that the second-to-last unit in the consist is an SD9043MAC. It is pretty rare to find those in coal service these days as UP decided in 2009 to remove them from said service. How things have changed. The Moffat has gone from an EMD-only club to almost exclusively GE!

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, the MRONY has a clear signal to head east in to Denver. From the looks of it, the lead unit has spent quite a bit of time traversing the Moffat...I wonder what "KNC" might be a reference to?

Progress is being made on the addition of a second main track between C&S Junction and Arvada. In the last two weeks, concrete ties have been laid and a couple stretches of welded rail can be seen alongside the ties. A westbound UP coal empty departs from Bypass 1 westbound.

With DPU technology more and more refined, it is becoming more and more common to find DPU's on manifests in addition to coal trains. A nice trio of elephant-style, flagged C44AC-CTE's made up the midtrain power on this 6,200 foot long MNYGJ as the train proceeds down the siding.

At east Plain, an exceptionally lengthy MNYGJ takes the siding to meet an eastbound coal load. At 6,530 feet, Plain is not a short siding. Yet the MNYGJ only cleared the east switch by about five cars once it was in the clear!

It would seem that the lead unit is going to have some difficulties flying, what with only half a wing at all...

The weather really cooperated here at Fraser for the Engineering Special. A major rain storm passed through less than 20 minutes ago, but cleared out and left sunlight in its wake in time for the special. UP's DDA40X was last on the Moffat in April 2008.

UP's Engineering Special, led by DDA40X UP 6936, is coming down the main at Fraser. At 4,830 feet, Fraser is definitely one of the shorter sidings on the Moffat.

UP runs an annual Engineering Special that frequently seems to make its way over the Moffat! Such was the case here as the eastbound special, led by UP 6936, wraps its way through Byers Canyon.
