Union Pacific is in the process of adding a second main track between C&S Junction and CP DS007 (in Arvada). Consequently, UP has moved the high-wide detector previously found at MP 5.5 to MP 8.4, just west of Carr Street. It's the second time this particularly detector was moved. When UP built the Arvada siding, the high-wide was moved from MP 6.0 to MP 5.5.

For four days in mid-August, UP closed the grade crossing at Lamar Street in Arvada. During this time, two new crossing were installed. The crossing to the north of the existing crossing (right side of the picture) will serve as Main 1 once construction is complete. The existing main (center) will be Main 2. The crossing to the south (left side of the picture) will serve as the Arvada Siding.

As part of the addition of a second main track, UP has laid the (concrete) ties and rails on the north side of existing main between Pierce Street and Sheridan. The ballast has yet to be laid. In this shot, the new track will end up being Main 1 and the existing track will be Main 2. However, around the bend, the alignments will shift slightly and the existing track will become Main 1 and a new track (yet to be laid on the south side of the existing track) will become Main 2.

Apologies for the lines crossing this shot. Normally I wouldn't include a shot with such unsightly distractions, but I did so here to show the progress of the construction of a second main track between C&S Junction at Pierce Street. Once the new track (seen here) is ready for trains, the existing main track will be severed and reconnected to the new main. The Arvada siding (middle track) and the existing main will shift to the left to accommodate the new track. BNSF's Golden Sub (running to Coors) is visible on the left. In the next five years, RTD's Gold Line will also come into the picture (quite literally) at this location.

In this shot, the tracks from left to right represent the existing main, the Arvada siding and BNSF's Golden Sub. As construction of the second main track continues, a new track will appear in this shot and the tracks will then be as follows (from left to right): Main 1, Main 2, Arvada Siding at BNSF Golden Sub. Grading for the project appears complete, so track should be appears in the coming weeks.

At Lowell Street, a construction sign has been erected letting motorists know that the grade crossing will be closed from 9/6/11 until 9/9/11. During this time, Union Pacific will reconfigure the tracks across the road, adding in new tracks to accommodate the new second main and the (slightly) relocated BNSF Golden Sub.

At Lowell Street, UP has a stretch of track down (with no ballast) that will eventually become Main 2. New grade crossing will be installed across Lowell between September 6th and September 9th.

Most days, UP runs the MNYRO, a manifest from North Yard to Roper, UT. This train, however, does not run on Sunday's. Instead, a MNYGJ runs from North Yard to Grand Junction. Here, the MNYGJ departs from Main 3 at C&S Junction. As it heads west towards Lowell Street, it passes by stacks of concrete ties which will be used in the installation of a second main track.

The MNYGJ is exceptionally long on this particular Sunday. According to the crew on the head end, the train is 6,200 feet long! Six units (3 on the point and 3 mid-train, just visible to the right) are charged with getting the huge manifest west to Grand Junction.

Here is an interesting find on the back of the MNYGJ! A Herzog machine is being transported from Denver to Grand Junction. This was in fact a topic of confusion briefly between the dispatcher and the train. They had thought this was a single car, when it fact it is two cars on the manifest. The dispatcher thought an extra car had been picked up from North Yard.

At east Plain, an exceptionally lengthy MNYGJ takes the siding to meet an eastbound coal load. At 6,530 feet, Plain is not a short siding. Yet the MNYGJ only cleared the east switch by about five cars once it was in the clear!

It would seem that the lead unit is going to have some difficulties flying, what with only half a wing at all...

With DPU technology more and more refined, it is becoming more and more common to find DPU's on manifests in addition to coal trains. A nice trio of elephant-style, flagged C44AC-CTE's made up the midtrain power on this 6,200 foot long MNYGJ as the train proceeds down the siding.

Did you ever read the "Where's Waldo" books? Well, I suppose the title of this shot could be "Where's the Eastbound"! The westbound MNYGJ sits patiently in the siding at Plain awaiting an eastbound coal load. And, if you look closely, you'll see said eastbound emerging from Tunnel 4 in the distance near the right side of the shot.

It's always fun to shoot an eastbound at the Blue Mountain grade crossing as the train winds its way through the S-Curves at the bottom of Coal Creek Canyon. Midtrain swing helpers are usually positioned in just the right spot in the train to be able to capture the first one along with the head end power, such as in this shot.
