It is nothing but wall-to-wall snow in Byers Canyon on this chilly January afternoon. A storm the night before left a couple of new inches, and temperatures well below freezing prevented much of the white stuff from melting. A westbound UP coal empty winds its way through the frigid canyon, headed for Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

It's no secret that the bottom has dropped out of coal and car loadings on all railroads has dropped precipitously. In Colorado, coal loadings are down nearly 85% compared to where they were ten years ago! For quite some time now, Energy Mine has only been loading trains for customers within Colorado. Looks like there may be a new customer though with this train. The train originated from Curtis Bay, MD! Not sure if it is a one time thing, or if Energy has found a tiny bit of new life. Guess time will tell.

The tracks and US-40 each share one side of Byers Canyon just west of Hot Sulphur Springs. Trains are limited to 20 MPH (Amtrak can go 25 MPH) through the canyon, making it a great place to get a few pictures and get ahead of trains. On a frozen January afternoon, the eastbound Zephyr makes its way along the Colorado River.

Running about 10 minutes late, the California Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east end of Troublesome as it hustles east. Amtrak along this stretch of the former Rio Grande is allowed to max out at 70 MPH!

This was, for me, the "money shot" of the day. I got a heads up from a friend that BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest would be running west with a CREX-leased ES44AC on the point! These leasors showed up on BNSF in 2014 when the railroad was experiencing a power shortage. The train just met the West Local at CP DS007 and is now headed west toward Leyden where it will meet its counterpart and the eastbound California Zephyr.

A look at the two private cars on the tail end of the California Zephyr, both owned by Patrick Henry Creative Promotions. The cars are based out of Houston, but were being used on this day to take some passengers from Chicago to San Francisco. In this shot, the train has just emerged from Tunnel 39 and is now in Little Gore Canyon.

The headwaters of the Colorado River in Byers Canyon are quite high as the westbound Zephyr glides by on the opposite side of the canyon from the photographer. Even with the cover of the clouds, Byers Canyon look amazing.

At the east switch of Tabernash, the westbound California Zephyr enters the siding. The Zephyr is meeting the eastbound MRONY, currently holding on the main track. There is a grade crossing on the siding at Tabernash (but there is not one on the main, and the main and siding are not parallel to each other). As a result, coal trains or manifests that have to hold at Tabernash will typically hold the main so the grade crossing on the siding is not blocked.

After leaving the mainline behind at Rocky, the West Local has backed up the spur and is in the process of crossing CO-93. As the local approached the highway, circuitry in the track detected the train (similar to a regular grade crossing) and turned the stoplight red for traffic. A stoplight facing the tracks turns from red to green. You can see the brakeman (yellow vest, left side) hanging on to the last covered hopper. He is protected the shove back and made sure no cars decided to run the red light as the train approached.

Gore Canyon! An amazing, vertical wall canyon that cannot be accessed by car. If you look closely, you can pick out the west portal of Tunnel 37.
