The E-unit and the DDA40X on Cheyenne Frontier Days are "home". When not in use, they are typically kept and maintained in Cheyenne at the roundhouse. You may have noticed that there is no nose door on UP 951. UP welded it shut and painted over the seams a few years ago.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Special is closing in on its destination! The train is currently on Main 4 and approaching CP W511 at the west end of Cheyenne. At CP W511, the train will cross over all the way from Main 4 to Main 1 and pull in to the Cheyenne Depot to allow its passengers to detrain.

A few miles west of Rock River, WY, this westbound intermodal train is making good time on its journey toward Seattle, WA (coming from Chicago, IL). This was the last bit of direct sunlight that we saw for the remainder of the day.

An eastbound manifest comes down Main 2 on the approach to Rawlins, WY. The train will stop and receive a new crew before continuing east toward Cheyenne. The train, like so many on the Overland Route, is headed for Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE.

Farewell to the UP 844 and its passenger special. It continues to steam west of Rawlins, WY, headed for Rock Springs, WY and beyond. The train will not be returning this way for a full month! Not until May 12th.

As you may have guessed, this shot isn't quite as treacherous as it might appear! The train was stopped at the old depot in Medicine Bow, allowing photographers to get shots from different angles.

At Medicine Bow (about 80 miles west of Laramie), a stop is made at the old depot. While the crew takes advantage and lubes up the rods a bit, it appeared this stop was mainly ceremonial. An opportunity for some pictures to be snapped.

My first shot of UP 4141, the George HW Bush Presidential Library unit, on the point of a North Platte-bound manifest just west of Cheyenne. It is late in the day as the train passes Borie on a yellow signal on Main One.

Leaving the last cut before Dale Junction behind, this westbound train is slowing on an "Advanced Approach" (flashing yellow) signal as it approaches the Junction.

At Dale Junction, UP's third main track (which lies on a separate grade from the first two main tracks west of Cheyenne) converges with the first two main's when heading west. Not far east of Dale is a massive cut towering at least 150 feet over the railroad. Here, a westbound unit grain train is about to pass through the cut.

UP 844 looks very good on the point of the Frontier Days passenger train as the train crosses from Main 2 to Main 1 just west of the depot in Cheyenne.

To avoid having BNSF's Front Range Sub from crossing UP's four main tracks using diamonds, a grade separation exists in Cheyenne. Here, a UP intermodal train crosses underneath a BNSF MDENLAU train!
