The steam crew will put the old gal in the round house and shut her down, likely for the rest of 2024. UP's tracks were here in Cheyenne before the C&S Line, meaning the C&S Line had to climb a fill to use a bridge to cross over UP's transcontinental mainline. Indeed, the bridge does carry BNSF's Front Range Subdivision across UP's (far busier) Laramie Subdivision on the west side of Cheyenne. UP 4014 and train are backing up on Main 4 to enter the yard through "the old way" to complete their day and their tour for 2024. The grade crossing at Southwest Drive is a pretty popular spot for railfans (and, in particular steam fans) to stop for some shots, and today is no exception. The train will take Main 3 from Speer Jct to Dale Creek Jct. Main 3 follows a completely different alignment from Mains 1 and 2, and heavier trains are often west on Main 3. Five miles east of here, at Walcott, the train crossed over from Main 1 to Main 2. There also happens to be a 10 MPH slow order across the bridge, so the train is move slow through the scene. This allows trains that were on the Overland but are headed for Denver, such as this Z-Train, to head straight for Speer for their crew change from Mains 1 and 2. The Big Boy established protection that prevented trains from coming through on Main 2 during the stop. UP allowed spectators to walk on the rails to get pictures. After spending over 50 years on display, the team rebuilt it and converted it to run on oil. Only 25 Big Boys were built and eight remain in existence today (4004, 4005, 4006, 4012, 4014, 4017, 4018, and 4023). These beasts are 132 feet long and weighs 625 tons. The clouds are actually quite helpful, as this shot is taken from the north side of the rails. On a sunny day, this side of the train would be cast is shadows. The temperature is a fairly mild 50­°F.
