A westbound coal empty makes its way west on the main at East Portal. The train was moving very slowly here as it was preparing to stop a few hundred feet ahead to shut down a bad order engine on a train tied down on the siding.

DS-82 instructed the engineer of UP 4517 to stop just short of the grade crossing near the east end of East Portal. Talk about following instructions! The engineer came to a stop just exactly at the grade crossing, allowing traffic to pass in both directions unimpeded!

Two SD70Ms and an SD60M lead the eastbound Roper to North Yard manifest through the siding at East Portal. The train will stop shy of the grade crossing to allow six westbound to slowly work their way west through the Moffat Tunnel.

The original BNSF paint scheme! It didn't last very long, but there are still a fare number of Heritage I units on BNSF's roster. Here, BNSF 1122 leads this MDVPVJ-05 on the main at the east end of East Portal.

In 2000, UP moved 69 SD40-2's from numbers in the high 3000's and low 4000's to the 9882 series. All of these units were "B-units" (meaning they could not lead a train), and all but twelve of these former Missouri Pacific units have been retired. UP 9885 is one of the twelve that are still on UP's roster.

Eight units, including a very new SD70ACe, lead the westbound MNYPV past the signal at the east end of East Portal. The train is running on an approach signal and will stop at the west end of East Portal for about ten minutes to wait for the tunnel to vent from the exhaust of Amtrak which passed by about ten minutes earlier.

In January, the sun is low enough in the sky in the mornings that it is hard shooting the Ski Train west of Plainview. On this particular Sunday morning, I went west to East Portal and got the train coming around the bend toward the east switch of the siding.
