It's been good to see coal traffic (and, as a result, all traffic) pick up just a bit on the Moffat lately. Earlier this week, there were two empties that departed within 20 minutes of each other. The night before this shot, there was a load that came east. Now, on this day, another empty is headed for the Colorado high country! Note the oscillating ditch lights on this lead AC4400CW. This unit was delivered in June 1995 as SP 249. Alas, it didn't even keep that number for five years as it went to UP 6527 on September 14, 1999. A very short time later, on February 28, 2000, it then changed again to UP 6422.

The westbound Zephyr is running just a few minutes late as it approaches the east switch at Leyden. The train is moving rather slowly as it is looking at an Approach signal (yellow over red) at Leyden. An eastbound work train is getting in the clear in the siding. By the time the Zephyr can see the west end of Leyden, they will be back on a clear signal.
The lead unit, AMTK 207, is the highest-numbered P42DC on Amtrak's roster!

The clouds on this particularly afternoon were really playing havoc with the camera. Dark shadows in the foreground (on the train) contrasted greatly with the brightly lit buildings of Denver in the distance. However, you take what you can get and, on this evening, what we can get is a westbound "Public Service" coal empty. This train is running from the Xcel Cherokee Power Station in Denver, headed for the Energy Mine loadout on the Craig Branch. Once the last generator at the Cherokee Power Station switches from coal to natural gas (scheduled for 2017), that will spell the end of this coal train on the Moffat.

BNSF runs daily trackage rights trains between Denver, CO and Provo, UT. These trackage rights were granted as a condition of the UP/SP merger in 1996. Here, an eastbound manifest is getting close to its destination. If you look closely, you can see an Approach Diverging (yellow over yellow) signal near the right side of the monitor. The Denver skyline stands tall in the distance.
