Under overcast skies and muted morning light, the westbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at 80th Avenue and a clear signal at the east switch of Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr is coming up to milepost 12 at the east end of Leyden. The train is accelerating toward the track speed of 60 MPH here. In about 4 miles, however, he'll have to slow down to 30 MPH.

The westbound Zephyr, with seven Superliners, passes by the somewhat woodsy east end of Leyden. The seen makes this area appear to be a bit more remote, perhaps, then is actually is.

It's been good to see coal traffic (and, as a result, all traffic) pick up just a bit on the Moffat lately. Earlier this week, there were two empties that departed within 20 minutes of each other. The night before this shot, there was a load that came east. Now, on this day, another empty is headed for the Colorado high country! Note the oscillating ditch lights on this lead AC4400CW. This unit was delivered in June 1995 as SP 249. Alas, it didn't even keep that number for five years as it went to UP 6527 on September 14, 1999. A very short time later, on February 28, 2000, it then changed again to UP 6422.

A westbound coal empty, with a freshly repainted AC4400CW on the point, approaches the 80th Avenue grade crossing and a clear signal at east Leyden. While coal traffic has picked up a bit lately, non-coal traffic has dropped off a bit on the Moffat. This empty will meet an eastbound at Rollins and the eastbound Zephyr at Granby. Not much else out there!

The Blue Mountain grade crossing is a fantastic spot to capture a train working up a mountainous grade while also capture the Great Plains in the background! Such is the case here as a westbound coal empty approaches the crossing on an unseasonably warm day. It was 62°F out when I snapped this shot.

Okay, going for a bit of a perspective change here! Shooting underneath the train in the foreground, the lead units of a westbound coal empty approach Tunnel One as seen from near the Blue Mountain grade crossing.

A single C44AC-CTE brings up the tail end of this westbound coal empty on a very warm January afternoon. The warmth will soon go, however, as measurable snow (3-6") is in the forecast for Sunday, a high of only 31°F.

I am making it a point to try to get a lot of shot of the tracks ascending from Coal Creek to Tunnel One because, in a relatively short period of time, it is very likely the mountain side behind the train will be covered in single family homes! Here, a single DPU brings up the tail end of a westbound coal empty, disappearing in to Tunnel One.
