There is a spot not far east of Range on the Dotsero Cutoff where the Colorado River makes a wide 180° curve. Colorado River Road follows the river the long way around, but the tracks take a shortcut, crossing the river twice in less than a mile. Here, at the west crossing, we find the Zephyr passing through a fantastic fall scene.

The Zephyr is nearing the west end of Red Canyon east of Range. I'm sure that you can determine the source of the canyon's name from this particular shot!

After a fantastic chase from Winter Park, this would be the last shot of this manager's special for the day. The light was already quickly fading, but the road bridge over the Colorado River (directly behind the photographer) was closed! Crews are working on widening the bridge to two lanes and had the single lane bridge blocked. We would wait another 20 minutes after the train passed before the bridge opened up.
