A few miles east of Sulphur, the Zephyr is going down grade, following the head waters of the Colorado River. The Zephyr will be following the Colorado River, for the most part, for the next 200 miles or so, through Ruby Canyon in Colorado and Utah.

Just east of Sulphur, UP 1988 leads an eastbound coal load toward the the US-40 overpass. The train is picking up a little speed again now that Byers Canyon is behind.

I've always liked the view from the US-40 overpass just east of Sulphur. It is a great spot for eastbounds, particularly in the afternoon hours. Here is UP's Roper, UT to North Yard, CO manifest.

The eastbound MRONY has a lot of power on the head end as it works up the grade to the east of Sulphur. Not all of the unit are actually online and loading.

Not too far east of Sulphur, the tracks cross from the north side of US-40 to the south side. It is a great spot to get a shot of eastbounds in the afternoon, such as this coal load. Westbound here on the other side of the bridge wouldn't be bad, other than a telephone pole with wires running right through the middle of the scene of oncoming trains.
