In the past decade or so, it has become far more common to find certain trains that have a mix of general manifest (box cars, covered hoppers, lumber, etc) along with intermodal. BNSF's QSPOALT, which runs from Spokane, WA to Alliance, TX, is an example of such a train. The front half of the train is general manifest, but the second half is mixed TOFC and COFC.

A BNSF coal load slowly grinds up the grade just south of Greenland. The train is just a few miles away from the "top of the hill" at Palmer Lake. There, the train will have successfully conquered Palmer Divide, and will continue downgrade on the single track main.

Some rain is coming down a few miles to the northeast as a UP coal load makes its way south out of Greenland on Main 1. The train is just a few miles away from the "top of the hill" at Palmer Lake. Once it crests the divide at about 7,300 feet, it will enter dynamic braking mode for the decent toward Pueblo.

If you are familiar with the Joint Line in Colorado, then its a good bet you'll recognize the red barn in Greenland! This view offers a slightly elevated perspective, including a southbound manifest waiting patiently at a red intermediate in the background on Main 1.

BNSF 7926 leads a southbound manifest on the Main 1 of the Joint Line. The train is actually stopped at the moment, facing a red intermediate signal. There is a coal train stopped in the block ahead, giving this manifest nowhere to go. The train could proceed at restricted speed beyond the red intermediate, but it would then risk blocking the East Noe Road a few hundred feet ahead. So, here at the intermediate it shall wait. The coal train is waiting on two northbounds. The joys of having to deal with single track through Colorado Springs...

This red barn is something of a staple here in Greenland, CO. Railfans for years have been setting up shots like this one of southbounds on Main 1. Meanwhile, in the foreground, Main 2 lies quiet at the moment.

A southbound BNSF manifest passes by the big red barn in Greenland. The "New Image" / "Heritage 2" / "Warbonnet" schemes made for an interesting walk through history!

This is probably one of the most photogenic spots to shoot a southbound anywhere on the Joint Line. It is around 2 o'clock in the afternoon as this BNSF coal load works hard to climb the remaining seven or so miles to Palmer Lake.

You can shoot the big red barn at Greenland from the east side in the morning, but you can also setup a pretty descent shot of it from the west side in the afternoon. Here, a pair of UP SD70M's lead a string of about 60 empty auto racks south.

The last DPU on a southbound coal load passes the grade crossing in Greenland. When looking to the southwest, you can get a nice shot of the DPU and the famous Pikes Peak in the same shot!

At Greenland, UP 844 has the Colorado State Fair passenger special well in hand, UP 1989 idling and enjoying the ride. There had been some question as to whether the special would run on Main 1 or Main 2 between Littleton and Palmer Lake. The train ultimately took Main 1, as seen here.

A manifest running from Denver to Pueblo (with three pumpkins on the point) is moving slow at Greenland. The manifest is right on the heals of a heavy, slow-moving coal load. Thus, the manifest is moving at restricted speed. A thunderstorm is brewing in the background.

Although this train could easily be mistaken for a southbound heading toward the camera, these "pumkins" are actually the helpers on the end of a northbound coal empty approaching Greenland.
