The Hudson Local, which departed the siding of Hudson about 40 minutes earlier, is now holding in the siding at Irondale. After the Chicago-Denver Z-Train passes by, the local will follow on the main and clear up on a side track at "Conoco" (the refinery in Denver) to allow the eastbound Zephyr to get through.

It really isn't too often that you'll find eight units on the point of a train in 2015. And when you do, it is quite likely that not all of the units are actually online. Such is the case here, has the last four units (GE ET44ACs) are all Dead In Consist (shut down) for the trip in to Denver.

After running track speed (60 MPH) since Keensburg, the ZCHCDEN (Z-Train, Chicago to Denver) slows as it heads down the main at Irondale. Not much will slow this train down, as it is the hottest BNSF train that runs in to Denver. On this evening, the train includes a quartet of GE ET44ACs.

An eastbound BNSF manifest sits stopped west of the west switch at Irondale (and 88th Avenue). The train was looking at a red signal at the west end of Irondale. Despite having my scanner turned on, I never did hear why the dispatcher was holding the train west of Irondale. The train was still sitting there after departing to find other action.

It is rather humid, at least for Colorado, on this Saturday morning as the westbound Zephyr charges toward a green signal at the east end of Irondale. BNSF's ZDENCHI (Z-Train, Denver to Chicago) waits patiently in the siding for the late Zephyr to pass. The Zephyr has nothing but clear signals (and one 25 MPH slow order) standing between it and the station.

Running about two hours late, the westbound Zephyr throttles up after clearing a 60 MPH slow order. The train also just crossed the "Quiet Zone" grade crossing at 104th Avenue, visible in the background. Note the "W" and "QZ" signs track side. The "W" indicating a grade crossing is coming up. the "QZ" indicating it is indeed a Quiet Zone and that no horn is necessary.

These days, freight trains do not typically (in general) run on a schedule. However, there are exceptions...at least to some extent! BNSF runs a single Z-Train into and out of Denver. The ZDENCHI and ZCHIDEN consist of COFC and TOFC cars (including UP trailers). The ZDENCHI departs Rennicks Yard each morning usually around 8:30am. If Amtrak is on time, this is usually right after it departs. On this Saturday morning, Amtrak was running late. As a result, the Z-Train is approaching a restricting signal at west Irondale. It will have to wait about 15 minutes for the tardy Zephyr to show up.

A pacing shot, offering a full length view of this latest GEVO model from GE. It is just about a foot longer than the traditional ES44AC. Must need the extra foot for the equipment used to meet EPA Tier 4 emissions standards.

This shot offer a pretty good look at the radiator housing on GE's new Tier 4 emissions GEVO. It is noticeably larger and has a greater slope that previous iterations. The single number board in back is somewhat interesting too. Unlike the popular (with BNSF, anyway) ES44C4 - whose axle configuration is A1A-A1A - this prototype has all six axles powered.

At the west switch of Irondale, this BNSF manifest (with some power-shared UP power) has come to a stop. Here it will wait for at least one eastbound coal load.

Even though the lighting is horrible here, I included the shot because I was intrigued by the nose of this SD60M. For whatever reason, the white face is gone and instead it is a green face!

So with three SD60M's and an SD70MAC, what were the odds that the MAC may have led? Turns out it's not a 25% chance. In fact, the odds are next to zero that the MAC was in the lead. BNSF has a policy that if there are AC and DC units mixed on a train, a DC unit must be on the point. If the AC unit was on the point, the engineer could actually burn out the traction motors on the DC units without realizing it from the AC unit on the point. With the DC unit leading, the risk of burning out the traction motors is greatly reduced.

While this overcast day did allow for "good" light, here is a non-backlit look at the power on the Denver-Edgemont train. The quartet of EMD's are currently pulling the train into the siding at Irondale to meet a couple of westbounds.

At the south switch of Irondale, this westbound manifest just got a clear signal and, in true General Electric fashion, the trio of C44-9Ws is putting on a show! Note the nine flat cars carrying tanks. I was guessing they might be headed for Fort Carson, but I'm not sure.

The twice-weekly (give-or-take) QCHIDEN is in the process of setting out a string of about 20 loaded auto racks at Irondale. An SD75I - with a very nice Warbonnet scheme - leads up the train. The conductor on the ground is preparing to cut the units away from the auto racks.
