A Canadian Pacific ES44AC is the final DPU on a westbound loaded coal train, the front half of which has passed through Nolan Tunnel on Main 1. I actually got a shot of this same CP unit just two days earlier in Colorado on the Provo-Denver. Looks like it go to Denver and was immediately added to this coal train.

BNSF's loaded coal train, headed for the Valmy Power Plant in Nevada, is approaching the Nolan Tunnels on Soldier Summit. Upon reaching Provo, the BNSF crew will get off the train and a UP crew will take over for the trip to Nevada.

A westbound BNSF coal load is taking on the 2% grade of Soldier Summit on Main 1. The train loaded in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, and is now making its way west across the former-Rio Grande. It is ultimately headed for the Valmy Power Plant in Nevada. The two coal-fired generating units at the plant are scheduled to be decommissioned in 2025, so this coal train is likely near the end of its life.

Kyune is one of three sidings located on Soldier Summit. Even though Soldier Summit has two main tracks, sidings are still occasionally necessary. If nothing else, two of them can serve as crossover between the two mains as they are "center sidings", located between the two main tracks. Kyune is the first of the sidings when heading west. The Mountaineer throttles up as the max speed increases from 30 MPH to 35 MPH. Note the very interesting signal protecting the siding. The red signals on the right side of the signal indicate the switch leaving the siding is aligned toward Main 2.

The Rocky Mountaineer emerges from the second tunnel since departing Helper, 468-foot Kyune Tunnel. The train is already in a very long OS for the east switch of Kyune. The signals for the center-siding are located on the opposite side of Kyune Tunnels.

Unlike the Moffat in Colorado, Soldier Summit has very few tunnels. There are, in fact, only three pairs of tunnels. The first one west of Helper are the Nolan Tunnels. The westbound Mountaineer is on Main 1, approaching the east entrance to the 403-foot Nolan Tunnel.

The curves at Kyune make for some really nice rail photography. In this shot, this Utah Railway coal load is headed west on Main 2. Next to it is the siding of Kyune and on the far side in Main 1.

The gentle S-Curve at the west switch of Kyune is a great place for a shot of an eastbound in morning light. If you look close, you'll notice a clear signal on Main 1. DS-78 is preparing for a westbound coal load that has not left Helper.

Utah Railway has, traditionally, leased power rather than purchased it. The lease is always an extended lease, lasting for 10 years or longer. It is always interesting to see what is on the roster each time you visit the Utah. On this day, four SD50S's, one ex-ATSF SD45, and an MK50-3 working hard up the 2% grade just west of Kyune.
