The MNYPV-12 had a fantastic lash-up on it on this cold December morning. Four SD70Ms split in the middle by a C44-9W, running elephant style. A fair amount of snow is being kicked up as the train has a clear signal at east Leyden.

The sole DPU unit on the back end of this westbound coal empty sits in the morning cold. It is clear, but it is only 20 degrees outside. The icicles hanging down from the anti-climber are starting to melt away!

This shot came very close to not being possible on this particular day! Due to problems with the MNYGJ, Amtrak 5 almost went via Wyoming. In fact, it had already departed the station headed for the Greeley Sub when the word came down that they should run west. For the first time in history (as far as I know), Amtrak ran via the Belt to get to the Moffat! Here it is, running about 30 minutes late, at east Leyden.

The crew for this coal empty (the CPASM-06) were called at 2am for the train. Six hours later, the train is sitting at Leyden (due to a pulled draw bar on the MNYGJ a few miles ahead). The crew ended up dying right here, rolling a total of about 9 miles over 12 hours!

A relatively small snow storm came through the Denver-Metro area on this particular morning. It gave everything a nice dusting of the white stuff, but temperatures in the 40s saw most of the snow melted by mid-day. The MNYPV-07 charges west at Leyden through the falling white stuff.

Stopped about a third of the way west through the siding, this short MNYPH-28 is tied down and crewless! The train came out of North Yard around 11:00am, but maintenance on the Moffat kept the train from making it any further west than Leyden. About five minutes after I left (at 4:45pm), a crew arrived and untied the train, ready to take it west.

BNSF's HPUEPVO (Pueblo to Provo manifest) has a very colorful consist as it heads west at Leyden. An SD70MAC, still in green and cream, leads up a C44-9W and a "Dark Future" CSX ES44DC.

With the classic Grande signals quickly fading, I wanted to make sure to get a shot of the manufacturer of the signal clearly visible. General Railway Signal Co, Rochester, NY. Made in USA!

I'm shocked that this signal is still standing at the east end of Leyden. It is now one of only six such signals still in operation between C&S Junction and the east end of the Moffat Tunnel.

In the last few minutes of sunlight for the day, I made the most out of the lack of trains at Leyden by nabbing this work train tied down on the House Track. The "old" signals that used to stand at west Leyden were always on (whether a train was nearby or not). These new signals are strictly approach lit.

This "work train" just left the siding at Leyden heading east toward North Yard where it will tie down. As I was approaching Leyden from the west, I heard DS-86 talking to the work train, I thought it might be something interesting...not quite what I was expecting!

Amtrak 5 heads west on the main at Leyden carrying behind it seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey (formerly American Orient Express) cars. You can see the difference in height between the Superliners and the GrandLuxe cars. This is the first trip of the GrandLuxe Limited, a new concept here in 2007.

It's pretty rare these days to see three P42's on the California Zephyr, but for a few times in October and November of 2007, such would be the case as seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey cars were added to the end of Amtrak, creating the GrandLuxe Limited. Here, the train passes by the east end of the Leyden on its first journey west toward Emeryville.

Approaching the east switch of Leyden, we see Amtrak 5 and the GrandLuxe Limited mixed together as one train. From October 2007 to January 2008, GrandLuxe Rail Journeys contracted with Amtrak to add a seven cars to the end of Amtrak.

There is a nice pink glow in the eastern sky as the sun rises early on this October morning. UP 4576 leads the westbound MNYPV into the siding at Leyden. The train will be meeting an eastbound coal load (already out of Rocky) before continuing on west.
