It's pretty rare these days to see three P42's on the California Zephyr, but for a few times in October and November of 2007, such would be the case as seven GrandLuxe Rail Journey cars were added to the end of Amtrak, creating the GrandLuxe Limited. Here, the train passes by the east end of the Leyden on its first journey west toward Emeryville.

Approaching the east switch of Leyden, we see Amtrak 5 and the GrandLuxe Limited mixed together as one train. From October 2007 to January 2008, GrandLuxe Rail Journeys contracted with Amtrak to add a seven cars to the end of Amtrak.

There is a nice pink glow in the eastern sky as the sun rises early on this October morning. UP 4576 leads the westbound MNYPV into the siding at Leyden. The train will be meeting an eastbound coal load (already out of Rocky) before continuing on west.

It's not too often that you'll catch a BNSF unit with AC tractor motors on the Moffat. However, on this first day of October, this particular train had BNSF 5720 in the lineup. This was one a pre-production GEVO from GE - in fact, this was the eighth-ever ES44AC produced! BNSF still has it labeled as an AC4400CW. The train is moving slow on the main at Leyden.

Nice evening light strikes this BNSF manifest as it slowly pulls its way on the main at Leyden. The train will meet an eastbound coal load here before continuing west toward Utah.

At the east switch of Leyden, this westbound manifest has been flagged past a red signal on the main. Light UP power is waiting at the west end of the main for an eastbound coal load. The manifest will sit behind the light power. Note the classic signal still standing.

One of the three F40PH's used on the Ski Train - SKTX 289 - had some bearing problems and was sent to Burnham for repairs. The stars aligned just right and the Rio Grande Heritage Unit was available. Here, UP 1989 leads the train west through Leyden.

Fog has settled in at the east end of Leyden amongst fresh fallen snow from the second blizzard (in as many weeks) that hit the day before. The eastbound coal load on the siding has been tied down and won't see a crew until much later in the day.

The wind chill outside is a chilly 8 degrees (F) above zero as a major blizzard moves into the Denver area. The blizzard, just getting started here with about an inch on the ground, is expected to dump between 18 and 26 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. Unimpeded by the white stuff, Amtrak 5 makes its way west at Leyden.

From a photographic point of view, both Amtrak and the Ski Train run in the wrong direction at the wrong time of day. The train run west in the morning (away from the sun) and east in the evening (away from the sun). That's why it is always great to find Amtrak running over seven hours late! On this afternoon, the sun was less than two hours away from setting when Amtrak 5 came west through Leyden at 3:30pm.

Looks like UP is importing some snow from the mountains, perhaps to points east. Okay, so perhaps in reality it is just snow-covered coal that resulted from the impending blizzard set to move into the area the next day.

It is a few minutes before 7 o'clock in the morning as UP 1989 (and three fellow SD70M's) wait at a red signal at Leyden. The 3,900 foot long MPVNY-30 is waiting for North Yard to clear a spot for them to come into town.
