Fall colors are starting to take hold in the Rocky Mountains as UP's Board of Directors Special slows on the approach to Kremmling. Once there, the train will drop its important passengers and tie down for the night.

Five units lead this eastbound BNSF manifest, stopped on the siding at Leyden. And, interestingly, four of the five units models are unique and each of the five units is wearing a different paint scheme! First up is an SD70ACe in KCS Retro-Belle paint. Next is an AC4400CW in KCS Gray pint. Third is a typical BNSF Dash-9 in Heritage II. Fourth is a beat up Warbonnet C40-8W. Last but not least is a very new SD70ACe in the New Image scheme.

After its long trip from Stockton, CA, this eastbound BNSF trackage rights train is just 10 miles away from its own tracks! UP's DS-86 put it in the hole at Leyden because BNSF's 31st Street Yard doesn't have room for the train yet. A sharp-looking Kansas City Southern Retro-Belle leads the train.

After meeting the Rocky Local at Rocky, this eastbound BNSF trackage rights train (the QSTDVJ) with a Retro-Belle KCS leader has an approaching diverging (yellow-over-yellow) signal on the approach to Leyden. There, the train will meet a few westbounds before heading into town.

Kansas City Southern's Retro-Belle scheme was popular with fans from the moment it was released. It is based on an old scheme KCS used in the 1950s called the Southern Belle. Here, KCS 4116 is being leased by BNSF and is leading the Stockton to Denver manifest down the Front Range, over the Moffat.

The Rocky Local throttles up as it moves west through Barbara's Gulch. The grade increases through here and a bit more power is needed to get the (rather long) local up to Rocky.

It was bound to happen sooner or later and on this day, it finally did! One of Kansas City Southern's new Retro-Belle units led a train over the Moffat. BNSF's Stockton to Denver (QSTDVJ) had KCS 4116 as the leader, as seen here coming into the siding at Rocky. The train would stop to meet the Rocky Local before continuing east.

This is a view that has the potential to change drastically in the next ten years or so. A new highway could be built across the tracks somewhere in this shot. Whether it will come to pass remains to be seen!

Another run for the Summer Ski Train as the train passes milepost 17. The private car with the Vista Dome - California - does not run on the train in the summer months due to the difficulties in climate control. However, note the addition of the bike car directly behind the lead units.

A UP coal empty has a mid-afternoon departure from North Yard as it charges west toward Leyden. Interestingly enough, the train itself is headed for the Savage Mine in Utah. Rather than running on the already-busy Overland Route through Wyoming, many Savage trains are sent west via Colorado and the Utah desert.

The westbound California Zephyr has been running with a very good on-time performance out of Denver through most of June and into July. Of course, that is due to the fact that the Zephyr has not been running between Chicago and Denver as a result of the flooding in the mid-west! Here, the Zephyr is approaching the east switch of Leyden on a clear signal.

It is just after 5:00pm as UP's MRONY-28 finally has a clear signal into the yard after a quick crew change at Leyden. The train departed from Roper, UT - the western end of the former Rio Grande - about 39 hours earlier. An all-EMD consist (including an SD70M, an SD70ACe and an SD60) lead the train on its final eight miles.

Even as common as patched Espee AC4400CWs are these days, it is still pretty uncommon to catch two of them together in a consist! Such was the case on this Sunday morning though, as UP 6406 (ex-SP 360) leads a coal load east out of Leyden after meeting three westbounds. Interestingly, the train is actually headed for the power plant in Cañon City on the eastern end of Tennessee Pass!

A quintet of SD70's (an SD70ACe and four SD70MACs) lead up this BNSF coal empty which is headed west on the Moffat. Roughly once each month, BNSF runs this 75-car coal train west to load on the Utah Railway at the Wildcat Mine near Helper, UT. The train typically makes an early, pre-dawn departure from Denver. On this day, however, it was an mid-morning departure, allowing for some pictures.
